This was a timely piece from Eric Lipton, who had covered Homeland Security, among other things.
I've been expecting this ever since drones were first touted as fun toys and a way to speed up delivery.
Killer Robots in the Sky? Arguing Over the Rules
As A.I.-Controlled Killer Drones Become Reality, Nations Debate Limits
Worried about the risks of robot warfare, some countries want new legal constraints, but the U.S. and other major powers are resistant.
It seems like something out of science fiction: swarms of killer robots that hunt down targets on their own and are capable of flying in for the kill without any human signing off. But it is approaching reality as the United States, China and a handful of other nations make rapid progress in developing and deploying new technology that has the potential to reshape the nature of warfare by turning life and death decisions over to autonomous drones equipped with artificial intelligence programs.
“This is really one of the most significant inflection points for humanity,” Alexander Kmentt, Austria’s chief negotiator on the issue, said in an interview. “What’s the role of human beings in the use of force — it’s an absolutely fundamental security issue, a legal issue and an ethical issue.” https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/21/u...s-war-law.html
Cant read the article because of paywall but... Cheaply manufactured drones give armies the power to respawn. That's a game changer. The war in Ukraine is a proving ground for how significant drones will be going forward. Then comes robotic war. War has always been hell, but I can't see civilized countries sending flesh and blood soldiers out to fight robots when it comes to that. What drones are already doing in Ukraine to both sides is quite nightmarish as it is. Maybe when it's only robots out there shooting and killing each other, war will cease to be the hell it is today? One can only hope...
Human history shows us that unless the weapon can be a big problem for you as well as the enemy, they'll still be used barring equally effective deterrents.
Landmines, Depleted Uranium, Cluster Munitions, Nukes....and Drones aren't going to go anywhere.

Hunger Games was the first thing I thought of -- but at least in those books, the evildoers signed off first!
Oh, well, maybe I won't have to worry about providing for myself in my extreme old age after all!!
drone technology is changing so rapidly it's hard to keep up..Russia just upgraded their missile tech from a drone going exactly where it's programmed to go by gps coordinates to one that can change destination positions by a newly inserted sim card..
The drones raise a lot of issues with regards to assassinations which we've already seen attempted.
Frankly the micro drones with shape charges are the truly frightening. Size of a large fly, sensors to detect the head and a shape charge.
Giant fighting robots are cool for movies as are terminator robots...but dropping 100,000 flies and letting them quietly seek people out in tunnels, bunkers etc. is horrifying and likely way more effective.

This was done in an episode of Black Mirror "Hated in the Nation", where drone pollinators were hacked and used to kill human targets from social media.
One only needs to watch the entire series of Black Mirror to see how badly the misuse of technology will likely play out. Some of the episodes have already happened in real life...maybe that's the point of the show's title.

Fear of tech advancement is a long running horror staple ranging from Frankenstein to Godzilla to War Games and much more.
That being said, some of it may be a bit of artistic license but some of it is spot on as a real issue.
I think the biggest problem is in places where you absolutely will not be able to prevent usage and then can only hope to mitigate. For example, cell phones aren't going anywhere.
reading quickly, my pattern matcher read ' timepieces from eric clapton'
