So my wife wants a tree (preferred) or a bush with deep purple flowers. I know very little about gardening, so I have to ask the experts here. Do you have anything with purple flowers in your yards or do you know of something that flourishes here? - Thanks!

As far as trees, there is a tree that is covered in purple (but not deep purple) flowers when it blooms, (there's one in my neighborhood, I think it's already done blooming, but I haven't gone by there in a bit) but that's a very short time. From an internet search, it may be a purple orchid. There's also the jacaranda tree, but again, not deep purple.

Shrubs: Texas sage, again, has purple flowers but not deep purple. I do NOT recommend the shrub known as Princess Flower (Tibouchina Urvilleana)

Texas Mountain Laurel is a slow growing tree with purple flowers.

Purple Trailing Lantana is a nice groundcover/shrub with purple flowers.

We have an orchid tree in our yard that flowers purple several times a year.

Nice tree, but very messy.

I have a few black maples that grow quicker than the weeds do.

Trees or Bushes with Purple Flowers for the Valley-04-2015-38.jpg

There is the Chaste Tree (Vitex), but it's not deep purple. This time of year the Blue Hibiscus is flowering.

Not a tree, but take a look at ruellia. Low water and have good purple flowers throughout the year.

That's actually the plant I meant to refer to above. I didn't think that name sounded right. We planted this once years ago because of the pretty purple flowers. Never again. Dug them out and got rid of them. Perhaps it was where they were planted, but they did not work out.

This link does not describe them as low water use, but says they need "consistently moist" soil. And the references to "aggressive self-sowing" and "fast, invasive grower" are definitely accurate.
