I am attempting to find as much information as possible about a building that was in operation in 1940's Phoenix that was less than 1/4 of a block EAST of 17th Avenue on the SOUTH side of Jefferson street. This building was a "mixed businesses" reddish-brown color building that included a toy store. Any sincere reply with a fairly good amount of information would be more than welcome. Thank you SO very much.

Well maybe its 1717 W Jefferson which is a reddish brown low rise building that is now the AZ dept of Economic Security? If you use google earth you can see a photo of it. Not sure if this is east or west of 17th ave.

It's just west (right on the corner). It is an old building, red brick, but I'm not sure how old. It may have been added on to at a later time, as there is part of it that is two stories. I'll go by there and take a look this week. I'll take some pictures if it looks like it will help.

So have I, back in the 80's. I think I was only in the 2 story part, for a meeting.

I used to work nearby, and have been in the 1717 building a number of times. I seem to remember there is a cornerstone on that building, on a south entrance of the building, which gave the date built and the original purpose of the building. Observer 53, if you do take a drive-by/photo-shoot, drive around to the south side. I'm thinking that building was erected 1952-ish. Now, I'm curious, too!

Thank you ALL for your replies, but it isn't the 1717 West Jefferson building. The address I had in mind for the building was EAST of 17th Avenue and Jefferson, and therefore would have been something in the HIGH 1600's, like 1649 West Jefferson or the like, and I believe it was higher than two stories. Also, I BELIEVE that there was a gas station just West of this building in question at one point in time. At any rate, thanks again to everyone for your replies.

Thanks, that saves me a trip. Unless someone has some old photos, and a longer memory than mine, I'm not sure what you will get here; those buildings have been gone at least the 70's, if not before. All state buildings now down Jefferson to 15th Ave.

Default More details for Urbex, et al

To Urbex, et al who might have some info. for me - I was mainly wondering exactly what the businesses in that building were - I KNOW for a fact that there was a TOY store of some sort, but it was out of business by the time that I was exploring the area (ROUGHLY 1959-1962). And, I KNOW that there was some stairs that led up to some office (which held a sense of mystery for a six/seven year old boy like myself). Now, I am guessing that there could have been medical offices, dental offices, law offices, etc. in there - but I would like to CONFIRM what businesses actually were in there, AND also, was the building 2, 3 or 4 stories? Just VERY curious to know. I warmly thank ANYONE on here who is kind enough to provide me with any additional information. DAVE
