There has been a rise in all kinds of hate and violence in the US - against Jews, Muslims, People of color, Asians, GLBTQ, women.
There is a movement to equate Anti-Zionism to Anti-semitism and to pass laws as such in several countries, such as in France.
There has been attempts to make BDS illegal. Donald Trump pursued legislation that would effectively prohibit support for boycotts of the Israeli state on campus. Boycott has been an effective non-violent tool against apartheid South Africa, and in India against the British Colonial rule.
What impact would these actions, if materialized, have on:
Free speech in the US
Rise in hate.
Economy.
Elections.
International relations.
This debate clarifies many issues related to the topic. It is long but a great debate worth watching.
My take on it is, while some anti-semites espouse anti-zionist views, the insistence that all anti-zionists are anti-semites is primarily a construct designed to stifle criticism of Israel.

Added to this is the weirdness of Christian evangelists who are hoping for the return of Jesus are Zionists and antisemitic and express hatred for Jews.
Can you be antisemetic and still support the Nation of Israel?
Sure. That is what fundamental Christian evangelists do. They are waiting for the coming of Jesus and Israel is the place.
Quote:
Christian Zionism’s support for the nation-state of Israel is rooted in relatively modern evangelical readings of Scripture that see Israel’s “rebirth†in 1948 as fulfilling the Old Testament prophecy, signaling the ticking of God’s clock ever closer toward the end of the world.
While some Christian Zionists reject Hagee’s end times prophecy, nearly all embrace God’s covenants with Abraham — and through him the Jewish people — as eternal. In this reading, the Jews are God’s chosen people and the land of Israel is theirs and only theirs. End of story.
Only when Jews move is it an issue. Humanity moves, and sometimes in mass migrations which displace others. That is a fact of life. If this were not true the Great Rift Valley of Africa would be a very crowded place.
Why is it that only when the Jews move to a new place, the world has a beef? Granted, there are other, more muted beefs as well. People do recognize in passing the replacement of Native Americans/First Nations by the British and French, but the moaning is less vocal than the constant, shrill attacks on Israel. I digress and note that 95% or more of the existing Native American population succumbed to smallpox and other diseases. Should 5% of the people keep 100% of the land? But these protests are reserved for Columbus Day. See below.
Why is it that only successful cultures and peoples are attacked for succeeding? Is there a whimper about Spanish and Portuguese displacement of indigenous inhabitants of Latin America, other than the annual caterwauling about Columbus Day? Is there a peep about Russia helping itself to the Kurile Islands. What about the displacement of the Ainu, Japan's forgotten indigenous people? Or China's rampages through Tibet and against the Uyghurs (sp). Any qualms about what the brutal Myanmar "Buddhist" government is doing to the Rohingyas? Or is victimization of Muslims only bad when Israel defends itself against car rammers, knifers or suicide artists?
Please, let's have some consistency. I think it has everything to do with anti-Semitism.
Yes. Please, let's have some consistency. I think it has everything to do with anti-Semitism.
I continue to disagree.
For clarification ... at this late date ... anti-zionism is seen as being anti Netanyahu
and HOW the conservative government in Israel conducts it's business generally.
Politics not Religion. It doesn't help anyone to confuse the two aspects

Do you think insistence that Anti-zionism=Anti-semitism increases hate? Because this insistence and attempts to pass laws silences free speech that all Americans value. Nobody wants to be silenced, not even in oppressive states.

Let me be clear; I am inalterably opposed to hate crimes laws. There should be laws against direct incitement, such as saying "I want you to torch (fill in the blank)" or "I want you to paint graffiti on (fill in the blank)." I think hate crimes laws are un-American and arbitrarily enforced.
