The New Yorker did a special issue about animals, and they re-printed an amusing casual interview with Terhune from the 1930s by the legendary Wolcott Gibbs.
Defence of Cats
Are felines lazy, disloyal opportunists with nothing to recommend them but a low mechanical cunning? Ask Dillinger, a cat who thinks she’s Gloria Swanson.
Mr. Terhune summed up his whole opinion of cats by calling them lazy, disloyal opportunists, with nothing to recommend them except a low mechanical cunning. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1...efence-of-cats

That is a FANTASTIC article.
I have had cats and dogs both. I like both of them - for different reasons.
Great article! I love both cats and dogs. Now living alone and being older I don’t want to live in a world without pets. I do take exception that cats haven’t saved people’s lives. I have read stories to the contrary with the most recent one a cat that was attacking a dog’s face because it was attacking a child.
That one's been around a while! I've read it before. It's still great. And I love cats, in spite of Terhune.
OTOH. Terhune was a huge influence on popular culture, regarding dogs in general, and collies in particular. And, he was a huge influence on the breed, through his writing. I do have to wonder, though, if he had been able to foresee that the "refinements" of the breed he was seeking would lead to the stupidifying of his beloved dogs, would he have made the same choices? He was a lovely writer, and I would hope that if he had been able to see into the future, he would have made different priorities.
