I did with our cat and I do with our bunny. I even use different ways of phrasing to signify the length of time I'll be gone, although I'm pretty sure those little nuances are passing by unnoticed. (I also make up songs to sing to them. You only live once. lol)

But they definitely "learn" our language. When I tell the bunny, "Let's go eat!" you'd do well to get out of her way. lol

Since we got the first dog, over 4 years ago. I have always told them "be good" when we left.

I like to think they take as it as a "command" of some sorts, and know we will back at some point.

Do that to a Weimaraner and it'll just send them to their insane, frenetic, destroy your house because of separation anxiety panic just a little bit quicker than normal...

Some breeds don't need to be reminded that you are leaving.

Yes, and I also tell them the oldest one is in charge, and to take good care of one another.

I always have but, they know by the clothes I'm wearing, if I'm headed for the barn or out the drive.

They understand "I have to go away" as their reaction to that phrase is a lot different. They stay put, for starters, instead of getting up and following me to the door.

I also leave the TV on for them. I won't pay for Dog TV but, I do find a channel that is peaceful.

I tell Tucker the dog to "guard the house" and "I'll be home later". I tell the cats to "be good and stay out of too much trouble", which of course, is impossible.

Absolutely yes. And as a variation on the above quoted situation, I refer to the eldest who also happens to be the more aggressive of our 2 dogs that she is the "security officer in charge".
The younger dog is told that she is the "...assistant security officer."

Whenever I leave the house, I say "Bye guys" to the 4 cats. Of course, 3 of them are female, but apparently they don't mind. When I open the front door on returning home, I say "Hi, monsters!".
