Don't worry about buying educational toys that are designed by some manufacturer to force the child to do what some edu-business wants the child to do. At that age colorful things that move, things that stack, things that make "ding-ding" are more important. Simple, plain, play IS learning. Body coordination, object recognition, creativity, getting along with playmates. Things like a box, some sticks, and Christmas wrapping paper tubes can become submarines, spaceships, time machines, periscopes, telescopes, caves, tunnels, gold mines, and a million other things if left to their imaginations.

Oh, and don't bother with those really expensive Legos that make Star Wars unless you plan to take it away from them and put it on a shelf until they are an adult. They'll just take it back apart, lose the instructions, mix the parts up with the other half dozen Lego sets they have and never get it back together again. Basic Lego build sets are better. But be warned -- they are dangerous land mines for barefooted parents.
