We are looking at moving from Phoenix AZ to the OC area. Job is in Anaheim by Disneyland, need to find an area within 30 minutes commute and we would like the best possible public schools. one kid in high school (in the IB program - preferably transfer to a good IB Program in OC) and one in junior high.
We plan to rent for the first 1-2 years, our research indicated Brea, Yorba Linda, Ananhiem Hills areas.. We are still reeling from the sticker shock of rentals, any ideas on finding something reasonable with the above priorities?
thanks in advance!!
Also, what kind of cost of living adjustment should we prepare for.. gas, groceries, rent.. 15% more than Phoenix or more??

What is reasonable? I wouldn't expect to rent under 2200$(assuming you're looking for a house). Los Alamitos/Rossmoor/Cypress is about 30minutes straight shot down Ball Rd/Katella to Disneyland during rush hour and that is the minimum you'll find for rent on average in those areas, which have top public schools. Westside Rentals, Pennysaver, and Craigslist are the best online resources for searching for a rental house.

Any chance you can just stay in Phoenix? Coming here is going to be a real adjustment from Phoenix.

I am also moving from AZ to Costa Mesa and I have been meeting some very positive people, trying to help me find a place because I just accepted a job offer. I grew up in California so it's nothing new to me but I don't understand some of the negativity some of the people put out here. (not all though) I wouldn't worry about such comments, there are too many really nice Californians that are more than willing to help with advice on renting, jobs, etc. Yes, the cost of living is higher but you pay for what you get. You want 116 degree extra dry weather? then let her move to AZ and pay cheaper rent. When you look out your window do you want to see greenery or possibly the ocean? Or do you want to see cactus and sagebrush for miles? Frankly, I'd rather pay and ignore the negative people, (which like I said, are very few). Perhaps they are trying to live beyond their means and are resentful of the higher prices. ?? Don't let it worry you, be positive and go for what you want in life.
