hedgefundpirate- As a resident of the area for many years I can help you out with your move. You can PM me if you have any additional questions.

Costa Mesa is part of the Newport-Mesa school district. It is combined so that the two cities share administrative costs, therefore reducing taxes/improving education. It lowers the amount of tax dollars/per student for adminstration. However, this does not mean that your children will be able to attend Newport Harbor High or Corona Del Mar High. You're child will attend schools in Costa Mesa. You should start your search in Eastside Costa Mesa. But, I did read something in the paper about Tewinkle Middle School(eastside) having problems(financial?). Which I thought was wierd. It could be because they just finished a big renovation.

Some parts of westside Costa Mesa you should use caution. Not that you want to avoid going there-it's not that bad. Just avoid living close by there. Lots of day laborers, illegals.. you get the picture.

Costa Mesa is doing the immigration checks, and so-far, so-good. It's deported more then 50 criminals so far.

Huntington Beach is also a nice option. (HB would be my first choice). By rule: Neighborhoods generally go up in price the closer to the beach. Also there is some prime real estate around Huntington Harbour, and Bolsa Chica wetlands.

For a less expensive alternative, try the area around Warner Ave. or north-west HB, near Westminster.

I feel very safe in all of Huntington. There's only a couple buildings in Huntington Beach that I wouldn't get out and walk around by. These are: right next to Del Taco on Beach Blvd. and a few apartments just below the split of Main St. and Beach Blvd.

I know a few guys/girls that are products of the Huntington school system, and they came out smart and friendly people! -And this was many years ago. I'm sure the district has improved tremendously since then.

H. Millard has written a great deal about Costa Mesa. You may want to Google his articles.
