Help -- I am thinking about buying a house in San Clemente but will be working in San Diego (where the 5 and 805 meet) and wanted to ask how long of a commute this will likely be in the morning (about 7:30 or 8 am) and evening (about 5:30 pm)

Your commute each way will probably be an hour and thirty minutes. The trip is probably fifty minutes without traffic. You will be smooth sailing, until you get closer to the city, then it gets ugly. Be wary of California Highway Patrol, they do alot of clock speeders on the freeway. Hope that helps!

the traffic comes to a halt in Leucadia these days and creeps all the way past Del Mar. After that I can't tell you, I always get fed up and turn around. I say give it two hrs if you are going during commute times. Better yet, take the train.

Dusesean is correct about the CHP's. They LOVE to patrol the area between the border checkpoint and Oceanside. Drivers are always going about 90 MPH in that area, so they have easy targets.

Taking the train is also a great idea. There's a station at Sorrento Valley which might be relatively close to your job.

Driving home, you'll hit a lot of traffic at 'the merge' (nickname for where 805/5 cross).

Thanks to you all. I appreciate your assistance. We love San Clemente, but may have to consider Carlsbad given the traffic.
