My husband just called on his way to work and said there was a massive fire in Tustin...he could see flames... didn't take long for me to find out that one of the two hangars at the former marine base in Tustin is burning down. I'll be leaving for work in a few minutes myself and should be able to see it...

Such a shame. They have been a landmark for as long as I can remember.

That's really sad. There were 3 pairs of blimp hangars on the west coast...one at Tillamook, Oregon burned down in the '90s. Two others at Moffett Field are still standing, one is being used as a hobby shop by one of the Google boys. I don't think any of them will be around much longer.

Wow. What time was that? When I was driving north through Tustin on the 5 around 7am, there was a lot more smoke than that. And when I came back the same way around 11:30am, there seemed to be two separate streams of smoke, as though they were coming from opposite sides of the hangar.

And I can't be the only one who didn't realize there was so much wood in those structures.

It was at 7:45. I believe those structures are the largest freestanding wood buildings in US.

On Thursday, county and city officials activated an Emergency Operations Center in response to the fire, air quality concerns, and cleanup of the incident. The center has also created a web page to provide the public updates on the fire and impacts.
