We might be moving to OC. I am originally from there, but it's been a long time since I was in school.

My son play AAU basketball and we are wondering if anyone know which teams in OC are the best ones?

And he will be entering jr. high next year and would like to know which schools have the best basketball programs?

Thanks

i used to referee youth basketball for NJB, which is an organization that put on local rec leagues but also had competitive traveling teams (National Junior Basketball). i'm unaware of any middle schools that have competitive teams, i believe most kids start playing for their school at the high school level.

Junior Highs/Middle Schools do not carry basketball programs here. NJB is the competitive basketball organization.

Are you sure about this? My son does play Club basketball and will continue to do that if we move to OC.

I know Jr. High's have basketball. I played. Plus I have looked at a few schools in OC and they have basketball teams listed on their websites.

All I am wondering is which school's would be the best as far as academics and basketball?

Thanks

Outside of private schools there are no schools that I know of that have official basketball programs and the CIF-SS website(the organization that controls prep sports) does not have any teams listed for pre-highschool basketball. Youth sports are handled outside of the school in southern California. NJB, Little League, Pony, CAGWA, Pop Warner, etc handle youth sports. There are park leagues that practice at the schools and may even be for only students at that particular school, but those are non-competitive and generally populated by children who cannot make it in NJB.

Hey friend... I saw your post on here and although I don't know about this first hand, I thought I'd mention that the district my daughter is in (Saddleback Valley Unified SD) does have a Jr. High after-school basketball program (as well as volleyball, and track & field) for both boys and girls. Not sure if they compete against other schools though. The schools are great though. It's probably best to check out the school websites once you're looking at a particular area. I'm sure everywhere else is similar.

But I also found a website for the Orange County Basketball Club (coaching/training and competitive teams) that competes with other National AAU teams, and they do have teams as young as 5th grade: OCBC Home Page (http://www.ocbasketballclub.com/Home_Page.html - broken link) (look under the link at the top "OCBC Teams" & scroll down.

Also another site listing AAU teams in a few OC cities as well as LA and the IE: http://www.socalhoops.com/southern.htm#Orange%20County

It's a good place to start... Good luck!

I have a neighbor boy who made the freshman basketball team at an OC high school this year. I know because he's been over selling both car wash cards and Christmas trees already. Any bets on what other fundraisers I have to look forward to? I'm sure we're not done yet.

Anyway, I asked him and he said most of the boys who made the A team played NJB.

Some districts do offer a few after school sports, but I think those are intramural type programs. Are you sure that's not what the basketball teams you saw on the websites were? I'm not aware of any competitve sports programs at the middle school level around here. Funding has been cut too far for that. Along those lines; be prepared to either fork over big bucks yourself, or fundraise like crazy once your son makes the high school team. Just don't send him to my house, OK?

Indeed, high school basketball requires a great deal of investment, which is surprising considering you only need 2 items to play it. A uni and a ball. We did absolutely no fundraising for baseball, football, or wrestling, but basketball required at least 600$ a commitment every season. Kids were required to buy expensive team merchandise(particularly bags, slacks, buttonup shirts, and blazers) to help fund the team. It was so lucrative the basketball coach ended up embezzling team funds and getting busted for it(late 90s, Los Al HS, Coach Brooks I believe)

I was shocked when we moved to OC and found out there weren't any sports teams in the middle schools. We had lived in 3 other states that had full sports programs in the schools at that junior high level. It's kind of sad because the OC kids are missing out on competitive team play between school districts that kids in other states take for granted.

It's just at a different level. The competition between basketball, football, etc persists, just within a different organization than a school district. And that's only in middle school. CIF-SS is one of the more competitive and scouted high school sports organizations around.
