No wonder. It wasn't true. The children died, due to being hit by heavy debris.

The Oklahoma Medical Examiner who released the list of names and cause of death listed mechanical asphyxiation.

Warning: The medical description below can be extremely upsetting.

Medical Definition: mechanical asphyxia. Choking caused by a mechanism that prevents lung ventilation. This mechanism can be internal (by foreign bodies or by drowning) or external (hanging, strangulation, crushing, burial).

Most places will never see more than one tornado in 100 years. A place that had 4 in 14 years, 3 of them had intersecting paths. People, how much are 24 lives worth? How much is one life worth? From what this thread seems to indicate, nothing.

So did the Oklahoma Legislature find a way to fund the many millions needed to make badly needed repairs on the State Capitol building? If not, it may be a stretch to expect them to do much to make Oklahoma schools safer.

I've seen Tornados suck the asphalt off the street and pull Oil Wells out of the ground.
Indeed, and if you managed to stay in the thing, debris might prevent an exit.

I believe it was the Shawnee tornado the day before the Moore tornado where a woman was trapped in her shelter. Luckily, someone heard her calls for help.

It's hard to get away from an F5.

Inbreeding is a terrible thing, it leads to engineers who lack the common sense to but a basement in a house. Besides, okies don't have to worry about men keeping girls locked up in their basement like in cleveland

Building code has a role as well. The frost line isn't terribly deep here in Oklahoma, or in the southern half of the US for that matter, so the foundation doesn't have to go very deep, therefore not even initiating a basement to be built.

Toured some of the remains of homes in the direct path. Really amazing what F5 damage is.

I Was impressed by one ICF home that lost its roof and all the windows were gone; but, all exterior walls were standing and really in good structural condition. Their safe room was all ICF and unscathed. Not certain if hurricane straps would have kept the roof on or not but they weren't used.

Did see one house with a basement and it made me think a specialized shelter was a much better idea even if you had a basement.

Almost every bottom plate was shot in and no straps or bolts. Seems that could help a lot to me.
