Hello, I'm moving to Muskogee soon (Fall of 2021). For anyone who lives or has lived there recently:

What are the best/worst neighborhoods?

What are the best restaurants?

Is there any live music? (jazz, rock, R&B, NOT country)

What is the art scene?

Is the Castle cool or cheesy?

Are there any night clubs with dancing? (not country)

Are the people open minded to a guy with tattoos and long hair?

Thanks everyone!

[P.S. I've seen threads on here about Muskogee that are primarily negative, but they're all over a decade old and I'm trying to get some current information. A city can change a lot in a decade.]

I wouldn't want to live in Muskogee because it has been a stagnant town for decades and because it has no Texas Roadhouse, Best Buy, or a Belk for starters.

I can only speak to the fact that I don't think long hair and tattoos would be any big deal in Muskogee...or anywhere else in Oklahoma these days. Maybe back when Merle wrote the song but not today.

At least Muskogee isn't as bad off as Perry, which lost its Wal-Mart several years ago! If a town can't support its local Wal-Mart, then that is a pretty damned bad situation to be in!

You'd be better off moving to Stillwater, especially if the Tremors part of the Tumbleweed, which has non country dancing is still open. For jazz, the legendary Preservation Hall Band of New Orleans performed at the recently opened McKnight Center for the Performing Arts in Stillwater in early 2020. I loved it. The band took to perfuming in the aisles at the end. Covid stopped things, so the Philadelphia Orchestra opening the 2020-21 season with Beethoven's 9th had to be canceled, darn it.

Thanks to those who have posted replies telling me to move somewhere else. Moving somewhere else or commuting is not an option. I bought a business in Muskogee and I'm moving to Muskogee and nowhere else. I will be happy and have a great life there.

I hope all of you are happy with where you live.

Thanks StillwaterTownie for the helpful information about the music and arts scene.

You will be fine.

I bought a house in a small town in Oklahoma and I like it. Even to this day when I go to different places like OKC I will get negative comments from time to time about small towns like mine.

Well, if you bought a business there then it certainly makes sense to live there and participate in the community activities. Muskogee is going to be a place where there are a lot of older folks who have lived there all their lives. A lot of the younger adults are ending up across the river in Ft. Gibson because it has the newer housing stock and it's school system is smaller and considered stronger.

Muskogee actually has some of the most beautiful older neighborhoods in the state in the area around Honor Heights park if you like that sort of thing.

Muskogee is a good jumping off point to some good recreational areas. Lots of lakes and wooded hills. Not far from the mountains in Arkansas and SE Oklahoma. Obviously Tulsa is right up the road and OKC isn't terribly far away. NW Arkansas and surprisingly Ft. Smith, AR have a full calendar of events.
