Wife and I are coming from the east tomorrow and TBH we are sick of I-40 and the truck traffic. I thought I-81 in VA was bad but 40 may be a little worse. We need the trucks but these two lane truck routes are a pain. But just to get off 40 for a bit tomorrow I was looking at exiting near the Arkansas River and heading to Tulsa then back down to I-40 on I-44. Not a huge difference in time on this route but at least it is a break. Anyone know if 44 is a better but brief route with less trucks? If it is the same we'll just stay on 40. We'll be on the road early so if someone has an answer tonight it would be appreciated.

I-44 is marginally better but it's a toll road. That seems like a lot of extra road time.

You could drop down south to State HWY 9 and take it over to Shawnee and get back on I-40. It would be slower but it would only take you about 20 total miles out of the way.

Googlemaps shows it adds 30 minutes on the route I chose. 9 looks like a good option as well but will add a lot more time depending on how long I stay on it. But I can handle that if it gets us off 40 for a while.

I-40 is pretty bad in Oklahoma until you get to the Clinton, Elk City area and then it seems to be a lot better. Texas panhandle and eastern New Mexico are better still.

Just another tip. West of OKC, old HWY 66 is available as sort of a service road for a good part of the west part western OK. You can get on it and use it if you want to get away from the trucks. Nobody really uses it until you get close to the towns. It might be a good option to allow you to relax for a few miles.

I 44 will not be significantly better than I 40.

The roads in Oklahoma tend to be pretty bumpy and there are always plenty of 18 wheelers.

This is going to be the best planned trip since the invasion of Normandy.

Hopefully Weatherford treated you right. And the rest of your trip was safe..... and you are in sunny Arizona.

Weatherford was nice and quiet. AZ has some beautiful areas that I never knew existed. Sedona is incredible. My experiences cover Phoenix and Yuma for work so it is nice seeing other parts of the state.

Glad everything went smooth with the crazy weather the last week or so. As a former Arizona resident I am glad you got to see Sedona. The drive up Walnut Creek Canyon from Sedona to Flagstaff.

Arizona has a lot of beautiful and diverse areas.
