I've been doing a little research on Konawa since I have a dozen or so ancestors buried at the City Cemetery. It seems like a very small town where everyone would know each other. I was just wondering how accepting the people of Konawa are to new-comers. If my family came, we'd probably purchase a few acres and build a house. From what I can tell, there isn't much new construction in Konawa. Would I be rubbing anyone wrong?

I don't know a lot about Konawa, as I have only driven through. It is a pleasant type of town. Since you have some ancestors from there, you would have a connection to the place. Like any small town anywhere, a new-comer will always be a new-comer.

Oklahomans in general are accepting of new-comers. If you were to move to Konawa and build a new house, this would not rub anyone the wrong way, as long as you do not affect anyone else's rights.

Thank you Peggy and Jess - your input is much appreciated! I'm going to try to get out to Konawa this spring for a week or so to visit some grave sites and get a feel for the town.

I remember thinking while passing through Konowa that is would be a nice place to live. It is off the beaten path and has a very peaceful feeling.

It's funny because I was thinking "off the beaten path" as well. Konowa is very small. It's a little ways from Konawa to any town of significant size and the roads are narrow and windy.

For people who like to fish, Lake Konowa is noted as a great lake because OG&E has a power station there that keeps the temperatures warmer. I don't fish but this is what I am told.

Konowa is a hop, skip, and jump from Ada (the nearest BIG town of 19K or so) but is far enough away to be an isolated place somewhat.

I always liked Konowa, there is the OG&E (Oklahoma Gas & Electric) plant on Konowa lake. And the lake is warm even into early Winter because of the power plant there (Some skinny dipping did occur there in my younger years..

Yes, Synopsis was nekked a few times in that lake. Shhhhh, don't tell anyone.. ).

I think Konowa is a decent place, but don't know a lot about the town itself. I drive through there on my way up to my sisters on Thanksgiving and Christmas and it is still looking like a decent place to live.

Hey guys. I haven't had an opportunity to get on here in a while.

Strange I came across this thread. I'm from Konawa. By the way, it's spelled KonAwa not KonOwa. I still, and always will, live in Oklahoma but I don't live in Konawa right now but grew up there and still consider it home. My mom lives there and my dad is buried at Vamoosa cemetery. All my family stills lives there. I visit mom for the weekend whenever I can get my schedule to work out.

Konawa was and still is a great place to live. It definitely is small town. Everyone, or most everyone, is fairly involved with the school from football games, track meets, stock shows, and alumni reunions. Everybody shows up for football games and Konawa usually has a very competitive team. But, the point is that most everyone gets involved.

It is true also that everyone knows everyone else. Although, when I'm there now I don't recognize a lot of the younger folks but when I was growing up there I knew everyone and they knew me. I could go into any of the stores there and people would say hi, call me by name, and ask how mom and dad are. I really miss that but I have to make a living so I have to be where my job is.

Konawa hasn't change much since I was a kid other than a couple of minor things. Streetman's IGA is now located up by the Sonic but it used to be right on main street. They tore down the old building (don't know why). Now there's just an open space where it used to be. Years ago, my pre-teen years, there was Edison's five and dime. It isn't there anymore but I used to go in there a lot. As a matter of fact, when I was around 5 or 6 I decided I needed to go downtown....without anyones knowledge. Back then people could charge stuff in most of the stores in town. They had cards set up and you just sign your name on the next line to buy something. Well I had seen mom and dad do it so I figured I could too. So off I went to Edison's. I got a baseball and glove and oddly enough they let me get it. Of course when I got home I had to show off my new stuff that I was so proud of and the only one to show it to was mom. She said "where did you get that?" I said "Edison's". She immediately called them and asked why they were letting a 5 year old buy stuff on credit. Anyway, as it turned out I got to keep the stuff. Dad thought it was the funniest thing ever but mom didn't. Up until my early teens Konawa had a drug store. You could get ice cream cones, floats, shakes, and your prescriptions. It was a really neat place. It was like any soda fountain you might see in the movies but not as big. At one time Konawa had a movie theater. It was awesome....to us anyway. I used to go to the movies and get a suicide to drink. If you don't know what a suicide is it's a drink with Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Mountain Dew, pickle juice, and whatever else they had all mixed together. Konawa even had a hotel at one time. Over time it sort of became apartments for people to live in but then they eventually tore it down. My cousin lived in it for a while.

Konawa is a great town to raise kids in, in my opinion. But, no matter where you go, there is always going to be the nuts and crazies. Konawa is no different but the majority are good, hard working, down to earth people. The school system is excellent for such a small town with many activities for the students to involve themselves in.

If you are looking for a small town atmosphere with down home folks you can't do much better than Konawa.

Great post Okiewolf. I liked your story. It reminds me of the two small towns that I grew up in; Gerty, and then at the age of 11, Allen.
