Knowles is a top notch DC.

The one thing I've heard about his system, however, is that it is pretty complex. Might take time for players to really feel comfortable with it.

That might be a factor this season, so if the defense starts of slow, no need to panic. There just may be a learning curve period.

All reports are that Ohio State's superior athletes have picked up the system quickly, and love it, because it allows them to use their speed to react quickly to any offensive play.

My hope is that Ohio State's defense is shockingly good against Notre Dame, which I believe is starting a relatively inexperienced QB with a thin receiving corps.

Last year's Ohio State defense performed poorly against top rushing offenses. Knowles' defense reportedly closes those running alleys left so open by last year's Buckeyes.

The betting odds increasingly favor the Buckeyes against the Irish.

That is good news then for the Buckeyes. We'll see in live game action how well they implement it, but if they're feeling good about it in practice/scrimmage, that's better than them not feeling good about it.

I think Ohio State should blow out Notre Dame by 2+ TD's even if they still had last year's defense.

If their defense is making progress like what's being suggested, it could be very ugly for the Domers.

Default Knowles "very comfortable" with the Buckeyes defense as Notre Dame game nears

The return of the Silver Bullets?

<<Although Ohio State's defense will maintain the 4-2-5 base defensive structure it had last season, Knowles' scheme is expected to incorporate a much wider variety of defensive alignment, personnel packages and blitzes. He's been described by Ohio State's defensive players as a "genius" and a "mad scientist," and his goal is to create confusion for opponents – and even for the fans watching in the stands or at home.

"I don't want the fans to know what defense we're in before the snap," Knowles said during a recent interview on Big Ten Network. "So that would be a good way to describe it is we want to be simple but multiple … I think as a defense, you need to have great disguise, be able to attack from all angles. And you really need to be able to do it at a fast pace. So if I'm a fan looking at it, I want to see people in the right position, but not exactly knowing what's going to happen at the snap of the ball."

What impresses me the most about Knowles is his dynamic mentality. Despite his great success at Oklahoma State, he's approaching the Buckeyes defense differently, reflecting the superiority of the on-field talent at Ohio State.

<<That said, Knowles also recognizes that his defensive scheme at Ohio State might not need to be as complex as it was at Oklahoma State because of all the talent he has at his disposal in Columbus – and the importance of ensuring those players can play at full speed.

"As you get down to the game, you want to make sure that you're utilizing that talent and not relying too much on scheme," Knowles said. "Everywhere else I've been, you want to make sure the players have enough to win the ballgame. Here, you want to make sure that they just know what to do and they can play fast.">>

If the Buckeyes defensive players believe Knowles is a genius, it's only because they grasp his teachings and belief that the Knowles' schemes and lessons will enhance their performances.

Let's hope both Knowles and his players are correct.

Default Knowles compares Stroud with Eli Manning

Browns defensive coordinator Jim Knowles says C.J. Stroud is the best QB he's faced in practices, apparently ranking him just above Eli Manning. It appears that Stroud's ability to process defenses has reached a new level in the off-season.

Stroud is an amazing qb.

Personally reminds me of a more NFL-caliber version of Steve Spurrier's "Fun n Gun" teams of the 1990s. And with Henderson at RB, should defintelhy be a fun team to watch on offense this fall.

Good overviews of the offense and defense as the opener against Notre Dame is less than a week away.

Default Into the crucible

The Buckeyes seem both confident and eager for the season-defining opener at Ohio Stadium against Notre Dame.

Default Quality of Buckeyes' opponents dealt severe blow

Given Marshall's upset of Notre Dame yesterday at South Bend, Notre Dame's value as an opponent in the play-off rankings suffered a severe blow. Had the Buckeyes lost to the Irish, Ohio State's play-off hopes may have been over.

Ohio State's first Big Ten game is against Wisconsin at Ohio Stadium. Yesterday, Washington bested Wisconsin at Madison, surely eliminating Wisconsin as a ranked team.

Iowa, another Ohio State division cross-over opponent this year, also lost yesterday to Iowa State.

Thankfully, on the plus side, Rutgers defeated Boston College on the road in a quality win. Indiana also defeated Illinois, a positive as Ohio State doesn't play Illinois this year.

An Indiana victory over Cincinnati in Cincinnati later this month also would be a major boost to the Buckeyes' play-off resume, assuming Ohio State defeats Indiana this year.

Sorry, but it was Washington State that beat Wisconsin.
