People will just continue to ignore the point about annexation being very low because it doesn't fit the popular narrative. Also ignored is that the city's population density in 218 square miles is already above that of Cincinnati's 78, and rapidly closing the gap on Cleveland's 77. For a city derided as so "suburban", it's development patterns are much denser than it's given credit for.

Columbus isn't the only city in Ohio building infill like crazy.Cleveland is doing the same if not more downtown than the other two c's. Cleveland has about 15,000 people living downtown with 2000 people on a waiting list.

I know that people are going to ***** on this post and tell me how much more urban Cleveland and Cincy are. I am not attempting to make a comparison, just saying that if you don't want to live in the suburbs in Columbus than don't live in the burbs or a far out neighborhood.
I love Columbus I try to make up to Columbus as much as I can for Ohio St football games but for living it is not for me, it is a great growing city thou so it is doing a lot of great things.

Cleveland's is largely focused in 2 areas- Downtown and UC, with a bit in between. It needs to see that infill spread further across larger sections of the core city, something I think Columbus/Cincinnati are doing a better job at. The list I gave above has projects across the city, and is far from complete. I would've added the planned project list, but it exceeded the character limit.

Ohio city, Tremont, Detroit shoreway too.

Cleveland is lagging behind because of vast ghettos on the east side. Nobody is going to build anything now in most of these areas.

As already mentioned, Cleveland has many square miles of ghetto areas. These areas are not going to see any significant investment for decades and are still the reason Cleveland looses population. Cleveland and Columbus are really nothing alike. Columbus is just now growing the past few decades, it hasn't experienced major downturns, poverty, riots or any extreme negatives yet that older cities experienced. But still, Cleveland and its many inner-ring suburbs are older, denser, more urban and served by superior public transportation compared to most of Columbus. Cleveland has been "up" , "down" and on it way up again.
But what Cleveland does have is huge momentum in its downtown ( 54 story nucleus ,34 story at playhouse sq. and 29 story 515 on Euclid ave. apartment buildings already announced) and new development along the lakeshore,Flats, near west side, detroit/shoreway,etc. not to mention university circle. 2000 people currently are on waiting lists to move downtown into apts. or condos as fast as they become available. IMO Downtown Cleveland is much more vibrant on a nightly basis with its 3 pro sports venues, the Flats , playhouse theatres, rock hall , casino and bar/restaurant/fine dining scene etc. , than either Columbus or Cincinnati.

I thought this was a thread on population, not new development?

I think the two are related.

For what it's worth, despite the fact that half of the east side is not likely to rebound any time soon, the development and population increases in downtown (especially the Flats) and Ohio City and University Circle still boggles me. It really does feel like a different city compared to 10 years ago. As long as you don't live in that 50% of the east side, I think most people would recognize Cleveland as an ascendant place. Not that you should ignore the ghettos, but I'm just saying that you see similar Columbus/Cincinnati like progress in Cleveland, albeit not as widespread. Of course, if the east side could by some miracle reverse trajectory, then Cleveland will be a preeminent city once again. It's happened before in other cities, so we can hope. But I still think that's at least 20 years off until we can possibly even think that some places would be desirable for an average person (not an urban pioneer, artist type).

JBCMH turned it into a development discussion. Look at the lengthy post right at the very top of this page.

I kind of find it funny reading the Columbus posters arguments and how they whine that they are constantly bashed by Cincinnati or Cleveland, but Columbus posters do the same thing towards the other two C's. JBCMH, you're extremely hypocritical when you bash Cleveland like you do. You can deny it all you want, but I have seen it here and on other sites where you bring up Cleveland for no reason even when it's not part of the discussion. Columbus tries to play innocent, but they also don't mind playing the victim either. I like all three cities, and truly are unique compared to what other states have to offer. But Columbus posters need to realize it goes both ways, and you're just as bad as the other C's when it comes to putting down certain cities.

What is your experience with Cincinnati or Cleveland outside of reading development forums? When was the last time you visited? How long? Columbus posters can talk numbers all day long, but how well do you know the cities you're talking about. I bet you really don't know them near as well as what you think other than looking at stats on your computer screen.

How well do you know Columbus? Just so we hold everyone to the same standard here.

Having just visited Columbus, I was impressed with how active and fun Short North, downtown, Brewery District, German Village have become. They are definitely on par with Cleveland's near west side. I can see reasons why some might prefer the Cleveland neighborhoods and why some might prefer the Columbus neighborhoods (for me personally, I do think Columbus has nothing quite at the level of Ohio City with the market and so many breweries in a row, mixed with several bus routes and red line rapid transit). But these areas of Columbus have definitely gotten better since I lived there last 6 years ago. Columbus has more of a Minneapolis-vibe where Cleveland feels more like Philly (I know that's not a 1:1 by any stretch of the imagination, but that's just how it struck me).

It's been 3 years since I've been to Cincinnati, but I'd really like to go check it out again.
