My wife and I just received offers to work in Dublin. We would have to relocate and live in Dublin, because my wife doesn't like driving; particularly in new places. We have a 5 year old son. I need to know the on the ground truth about the area: people, demographics, lifestyle, cost of living, and tolerance.

i grew up in dublin, and it definitely has it's pros and cons. great place to raise children. my childhood was ideal with great neighbors and plenty of kids to play with. however, with the rise in very high class neighborhoods, this is sort of dying out. outside of some of the original neighborhoods, you rarely see this. has a lot of pompous people, very conservative city if this doesn't bother you. great community events, probably the biggest and arguably nicest suburb of columbus. taxes are ridiculous. but there is lot to do and columbus being so close is definitely great. kid's complain that "everyone is the same" but i don't really think that is true. there are definitely a lot of extremely rich people, and i guess this is sometimes reflected in their kid's attitudes, but i came out of there and don't think it's always true. crime is non-existant. if you don't mind paying a little more, you definitely get your money's worth. hope this helps

Tolerance as in what? Racial ? Religious?

I think Dublin's one of those suburbs where people are too affluent and parcelized to really care about most issues that might concern you. If you can afford the house and you keep up your property, you're A-OK with most people Dublin. If you're a biracial couple nobody's going to burn crosses in your yard. The Jewish community is mostly East / Northeast but then there is a synagogue in Dublin and I know several Jewish families in the area. I think there's also a pretty large Asian population in Dublin as well.

If there's a specific kind of neighborhood that you're looking for just name your criteria and any one of us can recommend an area within easy commuting distance to Dublin.

Default Re: Real Skinny

Bengalsfan & YoMikey:

Thanks for the great information, I will certainly enter it into my data matrix. On the Tolerance issue - yes, I am concerned about racial and religious make-up. Sunday morning still is the most segregated time in America and regardless of your or my race, I don't want to live around people who don't accept others.

The area sounds very similar to our communities in both Florida and Honolulu. I don't have a specific kind of neighborhood in terms of names, I'm looking to be in Dublin proper.

Bengalsfanatic85: As an anodote, my wife is a big "ocho cinco" fan - so she will really appreciate your input.

Except for the part about Dublin people being "affluent", I would have to agree with this post. In Dublin the people don't care about race or religion, so if you're looking for a diverse area with affordable homes, Dublin is the place to go. (Probobaly the only places you'll find homes to be expensive and taxes to be high are in places like Muirfield, Belvedere, and places near them.)
