Rather, among Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Columbus, which of those is Salem closest to?

Never been there, but the map shows Youngstown as the nearest city, with the three C's all pretty far away. It actually looks like Pittsburgh is the nearest major city.

Salem is nice. It's got a small town feel, but still has some of the amenities of larger suburbs (hospital, fast food, WalMart, supermarket, etc.). It's a safe town and has good schools. There's a small branch campus of Kent State University there as well.

Of the three cities you mentioned, it's closest to Cleveland, just under an hour and a half away. It's about the same distance from Pittsburgh as well, maybe a few minutes closer to Pittsburgh.

Correct, about 75 minutes to Pittsburgh and 80-90 minutes to Cleveland.

Youngstown/Boardman (about 30 min), Canton (about 45 min) & Akron (about 50 min) are going to be closer options for most things that Salem doesn't have, although they of course don't offer everything that Cleveland or Pittsburgh will either.

Salem is about 2 1/2 or so hours from Columbus & about 4 hours from Cincinnati.

Salem is a small town, but does have a Walmart & Home Depot, so it's not tiny. Like many midwest small towns, it's economy was once heavily dependent on steel/manufacturing/tool & die/etc. type companies. I think they still have a couple big ones remaining with a presence there, but as so many other towns like them have been trying to do, they are trying to diversify and recover from a lot of those industries not having anywhere near the presence they once did.

Salem is very pretty with an upscale feeling and very inexpensive housing.

I also like Canfield and Poland. Pretty towns.
