My husband and I are professionals/early 30s, moving to NOVA area--he is working downtown (Foggy Bottom). We'd like to rent a condo/townhouse, close to metro/metro bus line with a budget no more than $2200. I've heard there are very nice parts Alexandria and Arlington, but also areas to avoid--any advice? We're open to other areas, too. Thanks everyone!

There aren't many places to avoid in Arlington/Alex - Northern VA is not known for crime like PG county Maryland and parts of DC. Here you'll find lots of nice places and most locations are close to job centers, transportation, excellent schools and shopping. There's one area north of old town that is off rt 1 that does not look appealing but its only a 2 blocks wide and crime there is nothing to note off. There are many million dollars townhouse that abuts it and the area is booming. If you want to be near metro, than old town, potomac yard, crystal city and ross/ballston corridor is the place. Average 2 bedrooms will run you over the 2200 limit but there are lots of apartment deals going on right now as developers are converting condos to apt and are anxious to fill them up. I got a brand 630 sq feet apartment with one parking space for 2100 a month and that is with 2 months off. You could probably find a better deal. Good luck.

As the LogSS said, don't worry about bad areas in Nova. There are a few minorly bad areas, but even if you decide to live in those areas it's nothing compare to other major cities.

If you're looking for metro access - then I'd say: Vienna/Dunn Loring, Alexandria, Ballston, Clarendon, Rosslyn, Courthouse, and several areas in DC proper as well as Maryland - such as Bethesda.

Yeah, you really kind of have to look for a bad area in Northern VA. Sure there are some lower income places and all, but you'd know that right away from first glance. Check out Arlington's Ballston-Rosslyn corridor (puts you on the Orange line for Foggy Bottom) or maybe Pentagon City (Blue line for Foggy Bottom). Best of luck to you in your search and welcome to the Old Dominion!
