Was hoping budget wise to stay between 2500 and 3500/month. Not sure how doable that is in Arlington. If not there, what about Alexandria?

Depends on where in Alexandria- there's the City of Alexandria where you generally won't find prices that different than those of North Arlington and even more if you are looking in Old Town, etc. The Alexandria portion of Fairfax County is more affordable and you might be able to find something in the upper end of your range. Check into Kingstowne or also look into Burke and West Springfield. You should be able to get a 3 bedroom townhome in those areas for the upper half of your budget. Schools are good in all those areas. Still fairly easy commute to INOVA and if your partner is in DC can take either the VRE (Virginia Railway Express- it has stops in Burke/ Springfield area) or Metrorail from Franconia-Springfield.
