I am quite looking forward to having a munch in my new home of Shamokin. I do wonder where one might find proper bangers or Welsh Rabbit? Have you any recommendations? What is the local delicacy?

Cheers!

Funny how Ivanhoe developed a Scottish writing style after his initial post talking of Fernandina Beach in Florida.

In my little neighborhood, the dish is cleverly known as "rabbit." My apologies if I've offended the locals.

It is interesting you've mentioned that. I'd spent some time in Fernandina Beach with a lady friend of mine. Unfortunately, the relationship did not work out and I've returned to the UK. I am looking forward to spending time in the northeast, as I am not accustomed to the wealth of the south. Thank you for reminding me.

Speaking of Welsh food, you will find at least two places in Shamokin and environs that sell *******. Not sure if any pubs serve them. Pubs -- bars, that is -- in the Anthracite Region generally have pickled eggs (dyed red from beet juice) and hot bologna or ring bologna as bar food. Offhand I can't think of any bars in Shamokin since Ye Old Coal Hole closed, but I'm sure there's one within stumbling distance of Rock Street.

Here is a YouTube link for the word above that got censored. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEO77qUpPaY

LOL I think he had BS called on him once too many times, and he's not coming back.

Although I will say that I had a decent meal in Shamokin on Thursday evening at a place called the Heritage restaurant, on Market St. I had the Duck Fat Fries and the Polish Platter (lean kielbasa, pierogies, halushki, and gherkins). My wife didn't care for the place. Just a word of caution -- I wanted to order the pigeons (halupki, not squab!) for a real Coal Cracker feast but they explained that the old owners still have the old menu up and the new owners haven't taken over the website yet!

Mr. Pizza has a new hanging sign out front, without rocks thrown through it (yet?). They were closed the day we were there, but are still in business. The rest of the town is still the same. No sign of a new "costume and clock shop" anywhere, and no buskers performing Shakespeare.

FYI "real" haggis is illegal in the U.S. unless you make it yourself, from scratch. Closest I've had is frozen haggis from The Thistle in Kearney, NJ.

I'm told certain fancy places in NYC serve American Haggis and a wee dram o' Glenlivet on Burns Night, but it'll cost ya, aye.
