I have heard about The NEPA Pizza preference, and it is odd. The locals reportedly are defensive about it and love their pizza a certain way. I was in Coaldale/Tamaqua recently. It is a depressed area, but struck me as a place to get away from it all.

That area is big time depressed. Meth central. Throw in Lansford since they are always in the news. For good measure throw in Nesquehoning. Used to own property down there. Finally sold the last one, recently.

I went to the Hometown Market yesterday in Tamaqua and I really just like the day out. There is a pizza stand in there and I see a lot of people walking out with several pies. Anyone ever try it? I tend to get the Amish chicken stand. Its not cheap but soo good. Only open on Wednesdays but its busy there. Lots of good deals if u can get there 7am-7pm

I know that my area is changing, I have lived here for 76 years and have seen many changes. When I was young we had to travel to Scranton, Allentown, or Reading to shop - there were no good local stores with competitive prices. We did have plenty of land to stretch our legs on, but change happened because when people sold their properties, they sold to the top dollar (that happened to live in the cities). So now many of the services we once lacked are now next door. The wages, which many complained about, are now improving. But it took time and there is still plenty of room for improvement.

While Mr. DavidWebb thinks this is the worst place to live, I disagree. I love my house, I love the area surrounding where I live, and have never had any problems. It is hard to see where it is all going, but the rate of change for this area is greater than it ever has been. We are growing fast, and my house sits in the middle of all of this new development. So I can predict that if I ever do want to move, the new development might be advantageous to current property owners. Of course, only time will tell.
I totally agree, there are always tradeoffs no matter where you live, there were things I loved about the Poconos, and things I wasn't crazy about...like the winter from hell we had many years ago, but, I will say this, I do miss the Poconos, a lot, as well as PA....

I hope you are doing well Fisheye, miss seeing you in there...real nice to read you

maybe I can share a different perspective, I am a foodie, and worked the food business when I was a kid, until I got into construction...and the food in PA, NJ and NY to me is unmatched....

4 years ago, I moved to SC Kentucky, and thought I was in for a real treat...well, much to my surprise, the food here is awful, that is unless you like fried chicken, fried tilapia, fried catfish....no decent Italian Restaurants to speak of except Olive Garden, Yuck! And Lord the Pizza here is terrible.

What happened here is people didn't need to attend any kind of school to classify as a chef, they just loved cooking so they'd open a small place until 2 p.m. and serve a very limited menu...they write their cooked meals up on the blackboard, which may consist of meat loaf, fried catfish and fried chicken. That's it, that's all you get to choose from in a platter and you can pick their veggies of the day....also listed on the blackboard....and this has been this way since the beginning of time...and they've never been back east, so, they've gotten used to growing up with their food being this way...or at least the say I see it...even their desserts are limited, there is no walking into a place and finding a whole case of pies and cakes, along with ice creams and ice cream sundaes....you might have 4 choices of desserts, that's it.

LOL, I was discussing this with a man from back east, who moved here and met his wife, who is a chef...he said he coudn't believe how little she knew about cooking...and how all the restaurants here not fast food places but restaurants have so little to pick from, they even have lousy appetizers, and a lot of places list French fries for an appetizer, no lie.

which is why I say, If someone from back east would come out here and open a diner, wow, that would be open all day, they'd make a killing, b/c these people love to go out to eat....every place is packed at lunch and dinner....even the fast food places...we have 3 Chick Filets in this small town, I mean they get packed...

So, it's what you grow up with and are used to....and the locals here are very defensive about their foods, as well, why, because they've never known anything else.

Anyway, as for me, I love Tamaqua area, and furter north, but hated the winters....they lasted longer when winters are hard, cold, and snowy...

Thank you, I hope you are doing well!

As far as food goes, no matter where you go, I cannot understand why TV programs like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives have not changed local menus. We see such creativity and then you go out to eat and all they offer is the same old. You would think that some of these owners would scratch their heads and ask why they don't have more customers.

Geeze, let me tell you in Quakertown Allentown and Bethlehem areas as well as south of Quakertown, right into Philly the diners have tremendous food....there is the Coopersburg diner, The Roy Ann on old 309, John's Plain and Fancy, Rockhill Filling Station, and so many more, really good diners, then Phonexville has some really great nicer restaurants I mean when I was still there, those places were booming...

Also, in the Poconos, used to go to several diners like the Saylorsburg Inn, Snydersville Diner, there were two right out on rt. 209 that I liked forget their names....they were darn good eats.....loads of Italian Restaurants....there was one, we used to love to go to, there was a Christmas Barn across the street, they'd give you 1/2 pound of pasta....we'd take our meals home and have them again the next day...oh and then there is Doylestown, New Hope, and other areas that have great diners and restaurants.

There was a great Buffet we used to go to at the Stroudsmoor....on Weekends.

But I haven't been to a lot of those places in over 20 years....but my family still lives in the Quakertown area there and they go to a lot of those diners, and restaurants, why Hotel Bethlehem is a great place to go over Christmas....?

So I know a lot of those places are still open and doing well....

My grandparents used to own the Saylorsburg Inn, I think, in the 1940s. Then they sold it and bought the Cannadensis Hotel, which they had until about 1960. My grandmother was a great cook and offered many dishes that I truly miss. She always considered herself a cook and not a chef, but she was responsible for all the food that was prepared at those hotels when they owned them. I loved all that she cooked but I really miss her chicken and dumplings and dandelion with sweet and sour bacon dressing.

PA originally offered "grinders" in south/central PA from what I was told. The grinder is a hoagie that they place in a pizza oven with the meat and cheese until the cheese melts. Then they take it out and add the lettuce/tomatoes/onions and usually a good oil and vinegar. If it is done right, with the right ingredients, it is delicious. In Connecticut, there is a restaurant called Nordellies (https://nardellis.com/locations-hours/). It advertises the "Best Grinders in Connecticut" and it means it. I would love to find a local restaurant but have only found one that comes close to Nordellies preparing one of these grinders and I cannot count on them for a consistent product.

As far as pizza goes I am surprised that our pizza restaurants have not watched Netflix's "Chef's Table Pizza" featuring Chris Bianco. They claimed he had customers lined up for hours waiting for him to open. If you offer great food the customers will come.

Love grinders and looked at the website you left, gosh, Nardellis has a lot of places.
I wish so, someone from back east would come here, I mean no insult but people here are used to this food, and they pack the places on weekends, b/c they love to go out to eat....many of the younger generation drives down to Nashville for dinner....but I hate the drive down 65 into Nashville.
Many of the locals here have never been any place else and tasted food from the east, however, I've had doctors that I go to, tell me they love to vacation for the great food and they to miss good food. If you like fried catfish, fried chicken, fried chicken steak, biscuts and gravy, it's all good, what they do make is good, but they just do not have diners like back home. Is the Snydersville Diner still there? We used to love that place, and also, Chestnuthill Diner.

I worked at the Saylorsburg Inn one winter when I was laid off from Construction....loved it there...my son and I used to go there for liver and onions...

and yes, dandelion with sweet and sour bacon dressing, nothing like it, we can buy dandelion up here in one of the stores...it has many health benefits...and chicken and dumplings is the bomb.

Your Grandmother sounds like she was a fantastic cook....
