As mentioned before, it is quite doable to live in a car or tent, but it would be miserable.
There was a several week period where we were lucky if the highs were in the negative teens. I remember waking up some mornings and it being below -50 factoring in wind chill.

Being a weathermap over here in the east....was scratching my head at the warmest winter last year in years.... I recall it being quite cold out west compared to the long term average... From NWS Bismarck climate page shows the last 4 winters being overall colder than average....January 2010 and January 2011 was a bit above average temp wise, but Decembers and Februarys of each winter were quite cold. The being above normal in January did prevent extreme cold from hitting us....but overall the last few winters have had more persistant cold temperatures than in the winters early to mid 2000s.

For Williston Airport
Dec 07 average monthly temp 13.7...0.7 above normal
Jan 08 average monthly temp 10.9... 2.9 above normal
Feb 08 average monthly temp 12.4.. 4.4 below normal

Dec 08 average monthly temp 5.3....7.7 below normal
Jan 09 average monthly temp 7.7.....0.3 below normal
Feb 09 average monthly temp 10.0...6.8 below normal

Dec 09 average monthly temp 5.8.....7.2 below normal
Jan 10 average monthly temp 11.1....3.5 above normal
Feb 10 average monthly temp 10.1....6.7 below normal

Dec 10 average monthly temp 9.3.....3.7 below normal
Jan 11 average monthly temp 9.1......1.1 above normal
Feb 11 average monthly temp 9.9......6.9 below normal

Lowest temps recorded in Williston for the winter...
Winter 06-07.......-22 Feb 07
Winter 07-08.......-28 Jan 08
Winter 08-09...... -37 Jan 09
Winter 09-10...... -32 Jan 10
Winter 10-11...... -33 Feb 11

The last rather milder than usual winter was 05-06 and 06-07....

Does this factor in wind chill?

No...

The average temperature given is simply the average monthly high and the average monthly low combined and divided by two. As folks who live in our area know....average wx rarely occurs....you spend time above and time below....but rarely are you at "average"

The lowest temps are the actual lowest temperatures....no wind factored in. In many cases, then the early mornings with the lowest temps will have calm or very near calm winds so wind chill is not a real factor.

Here's my 2 cents

Find a buddy to split rent with in an apartment. I've been intensly searching for housing and I've noticed that people are getting fed up with the high housing prices and then out of generosity, whoever is renting them out, is offering a way lower price per month, just because they don't want to see people freezing to death this month. Thankyou for those of you who are being so unselfish!

I live in northern Wisconsin and I remember how much snow we got last year, mostly because I had to shovel it. As for temps, I dont really notice them, like lisan said, once it drops below 0 for me, anything else below that just feels like any other cold day. Windchill sucks though, that can take a toll on your extremities. What I dont get, is how can workers work outside with a -30 to -50 degree cold for more than 15 minutes at a time and thats stretching it. Then if you get as much as a 10 mph breeze, your Moderator cut: profane. Every part of your body MUST be covered.

Yes, and forget the fact that you have got to perform on the job, safelt for long hours....Than take care of your own needs, food, rest. There is no way to safely do this while trying to live in a car. And, if your car battery dies, or you get blowing snow which covers your tail pipe, you are going to die, if you don't have somewhere warm to go. think about this, before you plan to risk these conditions. Please

Get a van with a high capacity alernator and 2 batteries in parallel.

Then you buy a 12 volt space heater......will easily keep you quite toasty if you buy some heavy sweats to supplement the heater.

Talldarkone....see the post I just put on the On my way to the oil field thread about the 60+ journeyman elect jobs around the state. Most are in the $25-$30/hr range, but one is up to $48/hr. Few are in the oilfield. Most are scattered around the eastern 1/2 of the state where there isn't the housing shortage.

appreciate it, found a great local company that was paying $32 an hour...I would have to be willing to settle down in this community , Dickinson, great company, would hate to take the job, just to quit 6 months later finding something different to do.

That don't seem right to me.

Eastern half? Too humid in the summer and not what I consider...shall we say 'Out west"

Beggers can't be choosy, I know...just not begging... yet
