Hi,
After searching around Virginia a bit,
My husband and I are hoping for an early retierment to NC instead and have been researching this very carefully. So far, we have narrowed our search to the towns around Charlotte, such as Indian Trail ,Lake Park or Weddington.
For Statesville, the Lake Norman area look s lovely as well as Tara's Trace.
We don't have to worry about schools as we have no children. What we are most interested in is what area is nice , quiet but not too rual and which city of the two has the most cutural divesity? We'll be coming from the northern NJ area very near to Manahtten so we don't want to move too far away from a larger city.
We're looking for low taxes with a range for a one family house around $325,000 or so, give or take a little either way. Also, which city has the better medical care? We're bring my elderly mom with us as she hates rude NJ too.

The Lake Norman area looks to be a very beautiful spot to live in...

Please, we're willing to listen to all opinions, good and bad! Does anyone prefer one of those areas to another?
Let it all hang out!
Thanks in advance.

Lake Norman is Great. I am biased some though as this is where I grew up. There is always something going on here in the summer. At Birkdale (Huntersville area) there is always music at the fountain with plenty of places to eat and shop. They have Philips place in S. Charlotte but I do not know about the music options there.

As far as taxes Mecklenburg County (which is what Charlotte is in) I believe is one of the highest tax rates in NC. If you move to Mooresville or even Troutman (Exit 42 on I-77) your taxes will be lower but from what I can tell anything in NC is better than NJ. Statesville is nice. It seems to have missed all the funding as everything ended up in Mooresville. There is a small rumble that that area is about to boom but that is a few years from now.

In the Charlotte area we are pretty lucky when it comes to Hospitals and Medical Care. There are some top notch Dr's around. So if this is a decision maker I would not weigh on it to much as the others (even though this is a important decision)

Good Luck with everything if Ican be of any more help please let me know!

Thanks,

I'd vote for Mooresville as well. It seem to offer everything you're looking for.

Sorry--make that"replies"!! Have the flu and not thinking straight!

Just for the heck of it, would either of you know how expensive lakefront property might go for?
I'm guessing it's out of our range but we're just curious. I can't seem to find any info on it yet....

you can get on the lake for around $400K.... probably would be a older home in need of some TLC. Sherrils Ford area maybe a little cheaper.

If you need any help let me know.....

Not sure what they have in Phillips Place, but they definitely have entertainment on weekend evenings at Stonecrest, Blakeney and the Promenade in South Charlotte. I think you'd be able to find what you are looking for in Union County -- and perhaps in South Charlotte -- in your price range, though it would not be lakefront. Have you thought much about Lake Wylie in SC?

It's just as I'd thought--over our price range but it doesn't hurt to ask!
Thanks for the info CharlotteAgent!
When we move depends on the health of my father-in-law right now.But you'll probably be hearing me hollering for more help and opinions again and again! We will definately contact you when we are actually ready to make a serious move. We are just in the early stages of getting to know the various areas and price ranges. We do know we want to be near a larger city but in a quiet community with a bit to do in town. Love a good selection of restaurants!
Good to know you are here!

Hi South.Charlotte and Union,
I am not familiar with Lake Wylie.Could you tell me a bit about it? I have no idea where it is but we'd be perfectly willing to look into it!
Thanks!

Debra

Lake Wylie properties are in North and South Carolina. South Carolina taxes are usually lower. It is not as developed as Lake Norman is at this point, but waterfront or waterview under $400,000 may be tough to find. There are nice communities in the Lake Wylie area that would fit in with your price requirements though they may not be waterview. Let me know if I can help further or if you would like to see any properties on the south end of town

Remember that Lake Norman is a nuclear lake with a powerplant on it. Also in my opinion Mooresville feels a little too country and lacks the urban feel. Traffic in the Lake Norman/Huntersville/Cornelius area is a nightmare because I-77 is the only corridor into Charlotte, and even the local roads are clogged all weekend long as people go on their shopping outings. The area has just boomed too much for the road network to handle. South Charlotte is really the only place to be in the Charlotte area for an actual (sub)urban feel, some semblance of ethnic diversity, and a variety of shopping/dining. South Charlotte has many roads and avenues that can serve as alternate routes, and a bunch of shopping centers spread out in different areas so not everybody is cramming into the same few roads all the time.

I don't know anything about Union County because I had no interest in looking at an area so far from the city.

And don't get me wrong, the Lake Norman shoreline is beautiful and the area is full of nice neighborhoods, but the traffic, the nuclear presence, and the lack of an urban feel are huge dealbreakers for me.
