I will hopefully be moving closer to my family in a few months, which, unfortunately, does mean I will be leaving NC.

Does anyone know anything about registering your vehicle in another state? My confusion lies with the fact that I don't have the title. What do I have to do? Get a copy of it? Get some sort of statement? I'm asking in advance because I remember when I moved here, I was leasing a car and there were tons of hoops I had to jump through. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row. Thanks

Do you own the car outright? Is the car in YOUR name?
Have you lost the title you had? Contact the NC DMV for a duplicate title

Then contact the DMV wherever you may be going and ask THEM what else they'll want.

If you are financing your car, then the lienholder will have the title. That should be no big deal in re-registering your car. Just be sure to have the name and mailing address for the lienholder. Every state has its own regulations regarding transfer of title. Whatever state you are moving to, go to that state's DMV online and look up their rules and process.

Thanks.
My car is financed, which is why I don't have the title. The state I am moving to says that I need to title. I called and was put on hold forever, and eventually gave up, which is why I decided to ask here

It will describe the lien on it (and that has to be dealt with)... but you should still have received a title.
What does your lender say?

The state you will be moving to will need to know the lien holder (the bank most likely). Typically once they have that info, along with the VIN, everything will be worked out behind the scenes. Sometimes it can take some time since the new state will have to issue a new title to the lien holder.
