Corning, despite COVID lockdowns and the resulting fallout (including some significant layoffs from the city's major employer) seems to be holding its own.
The surrounding towns appear to be pretty depressed and rural properties in the area are relatively cheap, but the city seems to have some pretty good bones, a quite respectable business district and a moderately urbane population. It is also located in a region that has significant agricultural and natural-resource assets.
The way I see it, this region could go one of two ways....but it has a lot of positives.
It is a company town with strong ties to the city of Corning. The school district which is technically called the Corning-Painted Post SD, covers the communities that surround the city like Painted Post, Riverside, South Corning, Gang Mills, etc. Some of those communities also have Corning Incorporated facilities as well. So, the "greater" Corning area is pretty solid.
It also has a Guthrie Health Network facility in Corning Hospital. Guthrie is a well respected healthcare network.
Market Street/the Gaffer District is a well regarded business district on a national level, as it was awarded recognition as a Great Place by the American Planning Association: https://www.planning.org/greatplaces...rketstreet.htm
I could see a city like Corning to benefit from all the goings on. If a few NYC urbanites moved here and started a business it would make a BIG difference in a smaller city such as Corning.
Pleeease don't let the cat out of the bag! Corning is a hidden gem - totally inexplicable when you spend a few days there. Food - awesome. Museum - awesome. Walk-a-bility - awesome.
Anyone know if the Dresser Rand factory in Painted Post is still operating? I believe that Siemens bought that facility.
