"A documentary focused on the Bangladeshi community in Hudson premiered Monday on Amazon’s streaming service.
“Hudson, America†focuses on tensions between the traditional Muslim community in the city and secular American society by boring into the lives and psyches of six Bangladeshi youths as they come of age at Hudson’s high school and in college. The documentary was shot over six years in Hudson and other locations, following the youths as they navigate their faith, their identity, and being Muslim during former President Donald Trump’s administration.
The documentary was shot by Zuzka Kurtz, who was born in Prague but lives in Columbia County, and Geoffrey Hug. Kurtz first approached Rasmisa Tasnim, one of the film’s subjects, at a deli in Hudson. Tasnim connected Kurtz with the other subjects of the film, all of whom knew each other from the tight-knit immigrant community.
The six youths' paths diverge as the documentary progresses: One becomes more conservative, eventually breaking up with his college girlfriend because she is not Muslim; Mahmuda Alam dates another woman, arguing the relationship is acceptable because the Quran only mentions prohibitions against men being with men; and Jabin Ahmed stays in Hudson, attempting to reform what she sees as systematic sexism in her community.
The documentary first premiered at Hudson Hall last February and has since toured the international festival circuit, getting screenings at the Portland Film Festival, the Around International Film Festival in Barcelona, Spain, and the Big Apple Film Festival in New York City.
It was also picked up by Kanopy, a streaming service available in public and university libraries, becoming available on Monday."
