Which is more of a cultural shock for someone from Middle America: A place like Jackson Heights which has immigrants from all over the world or South Bronx which has virtually no white people?

Can't answer the question. Too vague.

Is this person coming from heavily populated or sparse environment ?

Is the person entering a diverse or homogenous part of the city ?

Is the common cultures available for this newcomer ?

Is this person coming from poverty or an affluent background ?

Is there a language barrier ?

Culture shock is a result of unfamiliarity but if common grounds are provided assimilation is a smooth process.

If the question is geared towards the success of the metropolis I think many will be disappointed.

Gangs, grafitti, grime, congestion among many other things making this city unique are no longer considered cool !

NY is a brand name but it is no longer considered brand new!

I once met a guy, we actually became buddies. He was typical of the blonde, blue eyes from upstate New York and grew up a sheltered life up there. One day we went to somewhere in Westchester County, me driving, and among the many things he told me was:

“I’m from upstate and when I first went to NYC it felt like a different world. I was blown away in shock!”

He also said, though not related to culture shock, as he first met me “you’re alright.” No biggie, most people make incorrect assumptions of someone before they know him/her based on looks, but more important was what he didn’t say. Those words are blurted out only if reality isn’t what they originally thought!

Now I’m wondering what’s he is doing. I haven’t seen that guy in years!

Yes Siula,

The same questions apply because there are many possibilities that this working middle class individual from
Ohio or Indiana may encounter depending on where he/she lands in N.Y.C. and it is best to avoid situations
that can lead to catastrophy.

Once the information gathered matches/closely matches your needs/wants the
chances of making it in NYC will increase as opposed to just winging it blindly.

Best wishes.
