What is this Building Emissions Law? What are the buildings emitting?
Local Law 97, which became effective on November 15, 2019, sets limits on the greenhouse gas emissions of covered buildings starting in 2024 to help New York City reach the goal of a 40 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from buildings by the year 2030 and net zero 2050.
In the mean time, they're driving people out of the city. Where are they going? NJ, PA, CT, FL, TX, etc. All more suburban. All more autocentric. All more based on combustion heated single family detached houses. None care about greenhouse gasses to anywhere near the same extent NYC does. And this trend will continue as long as the city/state government continues to make the city less livable. So the increase in CO2 emissions from those fleeing NYC will more than offset any carbon reduction in NYC.
