NYC is a lot like the SF area where there are a lot of surrounding areas for commuters. I think you need to figure out your job and it's location. Then, find a place to live so that your commute is reasonable. If you are working at Con Edison, you can get placed in any part of NYC or Westchester. If you buy something first, you might get a job that is 3 hours away. You may also live in NJ and work in NYC or vice-versa.
