Some of you all need remedial civics classes. AOC doesn't govern that district. The city does. That's ex-cop Eric Adams, mayor.

The only reason people in socialist countries normally don’t leave their neighborhoods is because they can’t afford it. Think Habana Centro and why people don’t leave that place.

Some might say “if we look at poor capitalist countries we see the same,” but that’s not true. For one thing, immigration flows from socialist countries to poor capitalists countries is one way and hardly anyone moves from the capitalistic to the socialist. While there is a variety between rich and poor capitalistic countries, all socialist countries are poor. That should be a sign. Plus, even in poor countries there are people from poor neighborhoods that move up the socioeconomic ladder and move out of the poor neighborhood. Not so in socialist countries.

Ah, yes, the joys of democracy. A vile system where a majority can legally persecute a minority - or tax the snot out of them. Generally devolves to "tax and bribe" corruption, where the recipients outnumber the donors.

What was the city per capita budget, adjusted for inflation, in 1900?

The budget in 1900 was $80,478,972. That is just shy of $3 billion in today’s currency.

https://www.nytimes.com/1899/10/31/a...047897248.html

The NYC population was 3,400,000 in 1900.

1900 per capita expenditures - $883/pp.
2024 per capita expenditures - $12,588/pp.

We spend almost 15x more per person in this city and you’re comparing 2024 to 1900. Hood scholarship?

People should keep in mind that the USA was a bunch of rich English colonies that in 1776 broke off the British Empire, united to become one country and simply got richer as time went on. That image is of a rich country in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. Overall, life was better there than elsewhere in the world.

People left for better circumstances. Bigger, newer abodes, suburbia.

Same reason people come and go from places everywhere.

More sold before the cash offers than sold after. That's the only way a neighborhood turns over. It's a natural progression.

You think one day tens of thousands of Chinese got together and showered money on NE Queens?

Think about it. What started to spur the real demand from Chinese in NE Queens? First, there had to be Chinese *gentrifiers* who put in the work on the ground floor. Improved the schools, built out retail businesses and services, etc. That takes decades.

Once other Chinese saw how valuable the neighborhood was for them with regard to what they desired in a neighborhood, only then did the real valuable demand start.

It works the same way for any neighborhood that turns over unless people are fleeing and selling at a discount. The people in NE Queens didn't flee. They simply turned over the neighborhood because there wasn't enough demand from their own community.

If you want an example of fleeing, look at Canarsie in Brooklyn. I'm familiar with Brooklyn so this is probably the best example I can give. The Jews in Canarsie fled and the RE prices reflect that to this day. Canarsie was a beautiful neighborhood with a great location.
