Hello,

I'm considering an apartment in the landmarked section of bed stuy near Fulton, between Utica and throop but only the express is relevant.

I used to visit a friend in this area but that was about 6 years ago. Bed stuy has changed much since 2020.

I hear mixed things about this area. On one hand, the landmarked stuyvesant heights area is sometimes mythologized as the one section that never declined relative to the others. On the other, I've heard that the walk from Utica ave station isn't great at night.

Recently I've lived for a little bit in the western sections like clinton hill (pretty good) and bedford ave (decent) and I always thought landmarked stuy heights would be at least as good.

But now streeteasy claims the whole area from throop to ocean hill (all the way up to broadway) is stuy heights, so is this area anything special anymore? Even ocean hill has had many transplants and new places open recently.

Please discuss on the relative merits of bed stuy subneighborhoods in 2024 (western, clinton hill, broadway, stuy heights, ocean hill, etc.)

2024 Stuyvesant Heights is still the best part of Bed-Stuy
The walk from UA station depends on where you're walking to
If you're walking to SH you will be walking on Fulton St which usually should not give you any static
North of UA (Malcolm X) or south of UA (UA itself), much more "hectic"
Sounds to me like you're not used to living in a high crime area, no offense
Where are you relocating from?
I am the NYC MoD and am at your service. Whatever info you need, let me know.
I have decent knowledge of Bed-Stuy, I used to hang out there and have family in the neighborhood.

Thanks, definitely looking for advice from people knowledgeable about the area.

Now I’m in the Bedford-nostrand area but only for a few months. At first I was concerned about the empty streets I saw here at night but I got used to it and now it seems fine. Before that I was in various places around the ridgewood-bushwick border area for years which has more pedestrian activity at night imo.

Sounds like the walk on Fulton is not really a big deal then. From my visits years ago, I know the Utica stop is an unusual part of Fulton with the park, I could see it being kind of dead there at night. Visiting I always thought this was a good area, but I know actually living there can be a different story

It's dead because one side of Fulton Street is a park and the other side is a school. Talking about western end of UA A train stop.

Used to? No. High crime areas are not areas that rational middle-class people choose to live in.

My vote is hands down for the Bedford Historic District, which is where I'm raised, but Stuyvesant Heights is still good.

Wha?

Ridgewood/Bushwick border was happening decades ago.
Shopping and dining on Wycoff and Knickerbocker, visiting relatives and friends.
Bocce Ball at Knickerbocker Park. Paying homeage to the WWI memorial.
The old paisans and pigeon coops. Good old days.

Too think I would ever read of Bed Stuy giving Ridgewood a run for its money was unthinkable.
Not today. Times change and so do neighborhoods wiping out the memories that were once there.
