IMO, the Montreal Metro beats the NYC subway in every comparison.

It’s a newer system. Started up in 1966 vs 1904 for NYC, so no surprise that it’s better in many ways — just like newer US subways are. No surprise there. But unlike us, it isn’t a 24/7 system. Shuts down at about midnight IIRC.

If you go by looks, just about any metro system in the Americas look better than much of NYC's Subway.

The Paris, France metro also looks better than much of NYC's Subway. The funny part is that it's older than NYC's.

There is no point in dream of NYC's Subway ever looking like St Petersburg, Russia Metro. No way.

The Moscow Metro is another one that is nothing like NYC's Subway. Case in point:

The story of how Stalin constructed it is interesting to say the least.

That's pretty significant, IMO. As is the relative affordability of the subway system here (the flat fee is significantly less expensive than many others, which often charge by distance, etc.).

Added comfort, less noise, etc., are all great to be sure. And I wish that the NYC system was more comfortable, cooler on the platforms, etc. But while I'd ultimately want the whole package, I wouldn't trade 24/7 operations to get that all. Not when we've been surviving without for generations.
