Is the neighbourhood safe around 57 E 57th St New York, NY 10022 . I am getting to a lease for rental at a condo there for a year or so. Just trying to confirm things before actually signing it and moving there. I do have to work at graveyard shifts so its important for me know the surroundings and safety .
It's very, VERY nice! One thing that it's not is good for everyday things, like food shopping, dry cleaning, shoe repair, etc. The nearest supermarket is going to likely be the Food Emporium on Third Avenue and 51st St. Or you could try the D'Agostino at 57th and First. But that's another huge schlep. Better yet, order from FreshDirect online and they'll deliver. But you won't get to choose your groceries and the selection is limited. There's another Food Emporium at around 63rd and Third, but, again, a fair distance away.
The neighborhood is pretty, VERY safe, but not convenient for the everyday things in life.
We used to go to the General motors auto exhibit at 767 5th Avenue, check out FAO Schwartz, then on to Nathan's on 58th street-a nice area
Nathan's is long gone. As is the GM car exhibit, I believe.
In fact, I remember, as a child, going to FAO Schwartz (which is now a dim shadow of its former self) when it was on the other corner of 58th Street (the Southeast corner) and was truly magical.

Yes, the GM showroom is long gone. CBS News uses the old GM space to broadcast its morning show, and there's a great Apple store just downstairs.
The location is a bit peculiar in that it is in area that is basically retail and offices and hotels, but it is not too far from residential blocks. I can't think of a safer location that is inhabited by large mammals (including humans ).
Should be vigilant during the graveyard shifts. Lots of people put their guard down in midtown during the wee hours of the morning when you'll be coming home and that's when the muggers prey on their victims. Otherwise, nice!
