Aside from brownstone/limestone Brooklyn, I find the borough's residential architecture ugly as hell. Is there some pocket of Craftsman homes anywhere in BK or Queens?

It's not all ugly! There are hidden gems, like Pomander Walk:

Not quite sure exactly what you mean by "craftsman" but Brooklyn,Queens and even The Bronx have lots of neighborhoods with nice architecture that is not of the brownstone/limestone type.Queens and The Bronx have lots of 1920's Tudor style neighborhoods and Brooklyn is loaded with Victorian neighborhoods.

Try a google image search of "Victorian Flatbush".
https://www.google.com/search?q=vict...A&ved=0CDcQsAQ
It encompasses a rather large area of about 10 different neighborhoods.

Victorian Flatbush - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, even in many of the neighborhoods with the kind of ugly outer borough architecture you are referring to there are often nice houses underneath all those fake parapets and aluminum or fake brick facades.

My God, if I could afford Pomander Walk I would probably not be posting on City-data.

To wit, Craftsman homes, generally bungalows, are one of the most common housing styles in the country--most built from about 1900-1930. American Craftsman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I see them in cities large and small all over the US and except for a few behemoths in Bay Ridge, I haven't seen any here. Just wondering if there is some undiscovered Craftsman neighborhood I am unaware of.

I have no idea, but I assume you know that there are one or two websites specifically devoted to NYC architecture?

LOVE Pomander Walk, from the meager glimpse I had. I wish they would open it occasionally, like Gramercy Park.
