Sad to see that the Sheraton Mahwah Hotel may be demolished for warehouses. Major downgrade for the area IMO.

Quote:
The Sheraton Mahwah Hotel, an iconic 22-story hotel in Bergen County, has filed notice with the state to lay off 91 workers as officials say the structure is likely to be demolished to make way for two huge warehouses.

The Sheraton Mahwah Hotel will lay off the workers by Dec. 15, according to a WARN notice filed last month with the state’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The hotel, located near the New York border on more than 100 acres near Routes 17, 287 and 202, was built in 1986 and remains the largest structure in Mahwah, according to township Mayor Jim Wysocki.

I have been there recently and the hotel is dilapidated at this point.

It sucks to lose a landmark, but it never made sense for the area. It’s in a suburban area, not far from some areas I would describe as rural, and you have a 22 story building in the middle of nowhere.

I personally don't agree that its a major loss.

But as a side note - the hotel used to have a night club (illusions?). The fact that it was in a hotel always gave me the creeps. And ... the club used to host teen nights in the late 90s/early 2000s. It was a scene for the local high school kids, and some not so local as well.

Only in industrialized, overdeveloped Nj would a franchise hotel, replaced by warehousing, be worthy of lament.

Been there several times to visit company staying in NJ and thought it was nice. It is a landmark, hate to see things turn in a commercial area with no benefits to the public. I do understand that buildings of that size are a lot of maintenance.

This hotel always felt weirdly out of place and stuck out like a sore thumb. Not surprised at all.

Yeah the hotel didn't seem to make much sense there, so no surprise it's going under.

Warehouses are no surprise either. People keep ordering stuff.

The Mahwah Sheraton was not just a hotel, it also has a boat load of office space.

Illusions used to have an over-40 singles night. Had some fun there after my divorce 20+ years ago.

Also saw Huey Lewis there. He was part of the entertainment at the Volvo tennis event. I knew someone who worked there, and she snuck us in so we were right up by the stage. Only straight white man who could pull off wearing a shiny purple suit.
