NJ definitely isn't cheap and many people that want some type of suburban living move here from NYC. However, New York is another story. People pay high prices to live in NJ because there isn't much of a choice if you want to be in the NYC metropolitan area and still live in the suburbs. Now paying 600k for living in a townhouse in fair lawn is ridiculous. I don't see that selling out fast. The middle class is definitely growing but it's a tough middle class these days. Middle class will not get you to an elite town. Middle class these days might not even get you into an ok town for some.
Lots of defeatists in this thread. Complain that they can't afford good towns in Bergen county but then gasp if the house isn't all new inside and out. Buy a fixer upper for less money and fix it as you go. Or live with a dated kitchen. Big whoop.
Most towns in Bergen County are fine. Most towns in NJ are fine.
I agree about the expectations on homes...people have an idea that everything should be new and if a kitchen is 20 years old they think it needs to be gutted. That's not an affordability problem, that's just materialism.

isnt north arlington a dump? how is it the 8th best place to live in us
Yup. I remember a decade or so ago Kearny was ranked #10 or something. Oh boy, the mayor had a field day. Of course, none of the Kearnians believed it. The problem is apparent if you look at the metrics--real estate/rental costs is a huge percentage of the score. And in NJ, if a town is priced "affordably", there certainly is a reason...
You gonna get slammed in property taxes up north jersey. Central is more reasonable. And of course south jersey would be the least, if you don't mind living in the boonies
