It does seem as if there's been a lull for a couple of weeks. Maybe it's too hot.
I realize this is not in the areas where tourists/visitors go, but it doesn't do anything to help the city's image.
Just for clarity the link about the Asbury Park Apartments is in Little Rock, Arkansas. NOT Asbury Park NJ.
I go to Asbury all the time. But I go to Cookman Ave and not Bangs Ave, which is where almost all of the recent violence has occurred. To me its no different than going to NYC but on a much more condensed scale. I go to Manhattan all the time but I rarely go to Harlem.
It is better, but even a few blocks off cookman ave can be not so great (have heard of a few incidents on either bangs or summerfield). It is good to see, but they need to focus on areas that are not the boardwalk and downtown. I read an article in the Asbury Park Press recently where they want to take away a local fishing beach at the north end of Asbury Park and put up 15 townhomes. Also blocking off Ocean Avenue.

ROFL--good catch! I didn't realize that. I'd used "Asbury Park" and either "shot" or "shooting" in my Google search looking for articles within the past month.
As for the rest of your post, yes, exactly. I'm in NYC every weekday and have been working there for 32 years. I saw one shooting, years ago, on 42nd St. Cops shot a guy who had stabbed somebody else. The guy they shot was lying in the street and they were all standing around waiting for the ambulance to come get him. The victim of the stabbling ran away.
Asbury Park has some crime areas but that occurs over the rail road tracks far from the beach front.
Asbury is coming back and it is prime real estate and has a beautiful beach. It has some old structures ,started to be built in the 80's still rusting but there are new luxury condos going up by the ocean, and quite a few of them all along the ocean front.
I rode by the lake not too long ago, the lake that separates Asbury Park and Ocean Grove and saw some large swan boats in the lake. They may be paddle boats. There used to be paddle boats in the lake years ago to rent and paddle around the lake for fun.
I used to ride the bumper cars as a young teen and go on all the rides in the Asbury Park Palace and Casino. They are gone now . I don't believe it will ever be the same. As a teen I rode the circuit round and round with my friends as all the teens did with muscle cars in the glory days of the sixties.

And I'll add a fantastic journey that won't end anytime soon. Like yourself I was there for the great concerts held at Convention Hall back when this current revitalization effort was far from the reality of today. The restaurants and shops are are very unique and authentically charming. I see hospitality as far as hotels and B&B's making a big turn once this current economic crisis subsides. I feel the Chamber of Commerce is both sincere and driven to commitment of success. Come soon and... come often to join the surge of this famed Jersey Shore diamond in the rough!
Best,
Michael

Stayed in the Belmont Hotel, went to concerts at convention hall, got peanuts at Planters Peanut and went on the little boats in the lake.
I want to visit AP this season as when it started going downhill, I have sad memories of that too. How far along are they? From the article, I see there's some new clubs and restaurants and plenty of new condos.
The documentary on PBS focused on a little old lady (Angie) in her house near the ocean and the developers were taking over all the private homes (eminent domain), SAD!
Hi all, I know it's an old thread but it's a good thread. Need some info on where NOT to buy in Asbury Park. I'm looking for as affordable as possible yet still safe, but I like "gritty" too and like to be part of revitalization (example: I have previously lived in both Durham, NC and St. Petersburg, FL - I'm originally a benny from northern NJ).
Not sure I'm leaving NC to go back because I've gotten quite used to a lower cost of living, but I'd like to look into it. I'm seeing some TLC listings on/around Summerfield. Will I get killed? I'm female, living alone (well, with dog) - not overly concerned but don't want to be a total pioneer either. Thanks, have always appreciated Asbury Park.
MQ--The link above takes you to the Fox TV station in...Little Rock, Arkansas... where there is apparently an apartment complex called "The Asbury Park Apartments".
No, I am not saying that Asbury Park, NJ is an ultra-safe municipality, but at least that particular incident can be attributed to Arkansas, rather than NJ.
Edited to add:
Whoops!
I just noticed that this thread is about 11 months old, and Mighty Queen has already acknowledged the error of that particular linked news story.
