My husband may be transferred soon. The town might be going to is Whiteville, NC. According to what I have found on the internet, there is nothing around there. He has been there several times to work and says he doesn't want to live there. He wants to live in Wilmington. I am trying to find out what other possibilities there are. I know that everything is about an hours drive, but that is o.k. he drives 45 minutes, now. I would like to live in North Myrtle. We have two children 6 and 11, so schools are important. Does anyone have any suggestions on towns that would offer shopping, restaurants, activities for the kids? I won't be working so I don't want out in the country by myself.

thanks

From what I've seen Whiteville is pretty much out in the country without much shopping or activities. North Myrtle is a good hour drive to Whiteville, whereas I believe Wilmington to Whiteville is about 40 minutes.

Comparing the two areas, I would think Wilmington is more of a hometown feel, North Myrtle strikes me as a very resorty, beachy feel. Don't know enough about schools to compare. I believe that South Carolina property taxes would be favorable to North Carolina.

I visited Wilmington about a month ago and found a very pretty, active downtown area. It has most of the major shopping outlets you would want. Also, I was on the campus of and was very impressed by the UNC-Wilmington, which might be a nice place for classes, theater, sports, etc. If air travel is important, Wilmington's airport is more established than Myrtle Beach. Fares are much lower in Wilmington.

The beach is usually a half-hour ride from Wilmington to the NC Beaches. NMB on the other hand has a very nice beach right there. Hope this info helps. Good luck with your move.

You might also want to check out Longs or Loris, which would be closer to the beach.

Thank you both for your replies. I have been trying to get answers for a couple of weeks or other boards. I think we would like either Wilmington or Myrtle. I am familiar with Myrtle, but never been to Wilmington. We are from Florida, so I really miss the beach and the ocean. Also, it would be a plus to stay in NC. I want to go back to school and I am currently a NC resident so it would be much cheaper. I am hoping to go up in a few weeks to look around and test the drives.

Not necessarily. SC recently passed a Point-of-Sale (http://www.screaltors.com/webinar/Property_Tax_Brochure.pdf - broken link) property tax system, where newly-sold properties are accessed at the sales price, rather than the existing accessed value. In many cases, a new owner will pay a significantly higher property tax than the previous owner.

Probably not the most critical decision factor, but when tax time rolls around, life will be a lot simpler living in the same state where you earn your income. Having taxes withheld in one state and paying income tax in another state is a royal pain in the ***.

Good points, hadn't really thought of that. We have never lived in one state and worked in another.
