Hi there, I recognize you from the Charlotte forum. We are north of you but had two jellyfish stings today! Also two small sharks were caught by fishermen. Beach is nice though!!
Hi there,
August tends to be the worst time for jellyfish because of the warmer water temps. Jellyfish are also huge fans of piers or jettys because of more available food sources there for them.
We saw a lot more jellyfish also during the dry times when we weren't receiving much rain. With less rain comes more plankton build up and that is fine dining to jellyfish.
We have always carried a bottle of vinegar in our beach supplies. The vinegar helps reduce the burning and pain of the sting. I was told years ago that the vinegar helps neutralize the poison of the sting. All the charter fisherman I knew growing up used to used to keep vinegar on their boats because jellyfish would get caught up in the fishing nets and the crew would get stung at times.
