Looking at vacationing in either NC or SC next summer for the week of the 4th of July. I have a 6 and 9 year old. What beach towns would you recommend that have good restaurants, things to do with the kids, but have a quaint, small town feel. Wondering if that perfect combination exists...

Don't know if it's "the best", but I'd suggest taking a look at the Garden City or Surfside beaches, a little south of Myrtle Beach. They are very much family-oriented areas, without all the high-rise hotels and crowds you'd find in Myrtle Beach. Both offer a good selection of family restaurants, with all the restaurants located along the MarshWalk just a short distance south of there in Murrells Inlet. This area also offers activities such as putt-putt, a water park, etc, and all the kiddie activities available in MB are just a short drive away.

Yes, Surfside is what I think you are looking for. Kids can have a little freedom there that would be foolish a MB and you are close enough to the action If you feel like it. Surfside seems rather old fashioned and wholesome to me, but in a very good way!

Oak Island along with nearby Southport NC is an idea. Oak Island has the beach, Southport is on a little harbor with a nice park and several restaurants on the water. I recommend the Provision Company.

You can take a ferry from Southport to Wilmington. There's an aquarium near the ferry landing in Wilmington.

The Southport July the 4th fireworks are the best that I've seen. They shoot them off from a barge on the harbor.
