Going to be there 3 days end June, was recommended to stay in the northern section near Ocean and 72nd as it's quieter and less congested... which seems more appealing.
What are the pros/cons of staying in the above area vs more central such as Ocean and 9th?
Any other recommended areas? Ideally I would love to just walk to the beach and swim without worrying about driving somewhere and finding parking etc.
Also, any areas not to miss around Myrtle Beach besides the beach?
It depends on what kind of experience you want. If you want a quiet, relaxing visit and don't mind driving a little to get to a small number of attractions, then stay 72nd Ave. If you want to be where the action is and be able to walk to most things you want to see, then staying somewhere closer to the main drag is better.
As far as areas not to miss...depends on what your interests are. There are a wide variety of activities available to suit just about any taste.
Most popular beach for swimming? It probably depends on who you ask and what amenities you want with the beach. Most beaches do not have bathroom facilities so it's best to stay close to your hotel. The other options are the state parks which charge admission but do have bathrooms, etc.
Thanks, looks like there is good swimming in Myrtle Beach State Park and good parking as well. The park itself looks pretty interesting to explore as well. I will probably head there for swimming.
My $.02 from someone in my fifties who owns a condo at Ocean and 77th:
Ocean and 9th: Walk to attractions like the big ferris wheel, Ripley's Museum, and the Boardwalk. Video arcades, tacky T-shirt shops, some outdated older motels that leave a bit to be desired interspersed with the nicer resorts. Lots of foot traffic of all ages and descriptions.
Ocean and 72nd: no attractions really within walking distance except for the beach, but much quieter, much more family oriented, large beautiful beach houses between the high rises instead of tacky tourist shops.
I'm obviously biased, but I would definitely choose 72nd.
The northern part of Myrtle Beach is much nicer than central Myrtle Beach. It is residential, wider, less crowded beaches.
