So we are retiring to the area and trying to find a nice home in the 300 to 375k range. One thing that intrigued us with friends in the murrells inlet/surfside area was the "golf cart lifestyle" within 4 miles of the beach, but we have come to discover a lot f busy roads make that unreasonable. I feel we are opting out of some nice options, I just passed on one in Twin oaks, because of this. Can folks weigh in if the golf cart/close to beach is overrated?

I'm in North Myrtle Beach. Lots here use golf carts to go to the beach, supermarket, etc.
The carts cannot go on the busy roads (17) though and the city has a map of where golf carts cannot be driven.
People here seem to use the carts as a second vehicle for short trips to the beach, driving range within their golf communities and trips to some local shops where they can get there by the back roads.

It's not like the golf cart lifestyle you find in some Florida communities.

You should check the city's website (Murrells Inlet/Surfside) for the golf cart rules and see if they provide a map of where you can or cannot drive them.

As I understand it, in SC one can drive golf carts on any non-state highway. One can cross a state highway. There are other restrictions like age of driver, safety equipment, etc. Any golf cart dealer can fill you in on any rules/regulations.

Individual HOA's might well have there own rules/regulations so best check that.

That's right...you may CROSS main highways, but cannot drive on them. You must remain on the back roads. And, if you're going to be on the back roads, get a golf cart that is road ready, with lights, turn signals and can go about 35 mph....or you will be making ALL of the cars on the road pretty mad, poking along at 15 mph!
