My husband and I have a house in SC but we won't be moving there for another couple of years. We heard that when we move there we will have to pay a transfer fee and property tax for any of our vehicles that we move there. Is this true? If so, about how much is the transfer fee?

We were wondering if it's possible to buy a car in SC and get it registered there without getting a SC drivers license. We need to keep our NJ license because that is where we will be living most of the time. If we had a car in SC we could stop driving there all the time and start flying.

I don't know about the transfer fee( not called that). To register a car, you need to go to the tax office BEFORE you go to the registry. Bring in your current car registration, from other state. You then pay a tax ( in Massachusetts its called excise tax), here its property tax. Then you take the receipt to registry ( with paperwork ) and bingo.

There's not a site that advises on how to calculate tax on cars/trucks as there are variables such as mileage which can impact the rate. I just paid the taxes/registration fee on my 2006 Taurus. The tax was $39. Road use fee of $50 and Registration Fee of $68. Newer cars pay a much higher tax of course. But the road use fee and registration fee I believe are the same.

The Horry Country Treasurer's office site is https://www.horrycounty.org/Departments/Treasurer The tax is paid to the Treasurer's office.

You can email the treasurer as well. Tell them what year, make, model and number of miles on your car. You can even email them the VIN Number. They'll email you back in a few days letting you know what your approximate tax is.

Transfer fee is $250. I call this the 'Welcome to SC Tax'.

Really??? You're going to try and compare SC to CA for expenses? While CA fee for bringing the car to CA may be lower than SC, the environmental inspection fees, smog abatement fees, sales tax (capped on car in SC), much higher gas sales tax and a myriad of other fees add up to way more than SC taxes you'll pay. And that's not even considering that you can't bring a new car into CA which is not CA emissions certified. So, yes the transfer fee is less...but you'll end up paying far more to operate a vehicle in CA.
