I fallen in love with the Grand Strand and want to retire here. Does Georgetown County give the same break for residents for school/property taxes as Horry County? I will be retiring from Phila. Fire Dept. after 35 years and am so looking forward joining the community. I just want to get the most bang for the buck like anyone. Murrells Inlet is a choice along with Carolina Forest. I know alot of difference but both have plusses. 8/13/18 is retire date. Thank you in advance.

Georgetown from what I understand is slightly cheaper than Horry. But, we're only talking a few dollars here, not hundreds, or thousands. If you have a 200K home in Georgetown expect to pay roughly $590 in taxes. The same house in Horry is roughly $600. Let me say though, this is from information I've been told from people who live in Georgetown county.

I live in Murrells Inlet, and my property basically backs up to Georgetown County. I love it here, and I think you will too.

When it says property tax does that include the school tax. Or is that a whole seperete bill? Thanks for the info so far. I am so looking forward to this move.

The school property tax credit is a state law known as Act 388, and thus applies in every county. Owner-occupied residential properties do not pay school operating taxes, but do pay taxes for school district debt service. In most areas you will pay taxes to the County, special purpose districts if you live in one (most common for Fire or sewer service), and municipalities if you live within City limits.

Act 388 does not apply to non-owner occupied residential properties or secondary residences. There is also a difference in the assessment ratio between owner-occupied and non-owner occupied residential/secondary homes, but that is another topic.

It's all one bill. You're used to paying for high taxes up there. I'm originally from Long Island, my school taxes were around 6500 a year, and general taxes were another 4500. 11K total....

Now I pay roughly $1,000 a year total. My friends from up north still have a hard time believing it. Oh, and once you hit the age of 66, your taxes go down even more.

Another shocker.....HOA Fees.....we looked at some plantations in NC and the HOA's were somewhere in the $600 range....PER YEAR !....we were paying half that per month !

This is one of the big draws to SC for us. Having such low taxes actually cuts our mortgage payment
in half, which will help us completely retire. Up here in Jersey I cannot imagine full retirement with the
tax structure the way it is. I drive a school bus to help keep us afloat.
Down there I can see where we will be able to completely retire AND do it in a comfortable way.
