Among others, we are checking out the Little River area, outside of N. Myrtle Beach. Specifically, the area where 17 and 9 come together. Wondering if the Summer crush would be as congested while trying to access the beaches up there. Looks a bit more out of it and less touristy.

Short answer is no problem with traffic in Little River going to or from the beaches. However, depending on the day of the week and whether it's a holiday, you may need to get to the beach somewhat early to secure a good parking spot.
In Little River the closest beach options will be the Cherry Grove Beach, North Myrtle Beach (between 5th & 18th ave N) or Sunset Beach in NC. I prefer the latter two because there's no hotels bordering the back of the beach. In order to secure parking, generally getting there by 10am should be no problem on most days. However, arriving there in the afternoon parking can be an issue.
The biggest traffic backups in summer occur in the late-afternoon and early evening hours (June to August) as everyone is leaving the beach going to dinner, not going to the beach in the morning. In North Myrtle the main congested area is typically between Barefoot Landing and restaurant row, far to the south of Little River.

Little River is a great area, less congested than Myrtle but still fairly busy.
They do not get the 2 bike weeks traffic (except driving down the highway into Myrtle) but they do get the Shaggers.
We took a trip to NC to visit my brother in Calabash, and nephew in Sunset Beach and take a look to see if the area would work for retirement....both would suit us fine. My brother also suggested North Myrtle Beach and Little River.....took a drive thru both, now we are really confused as all fit the bill.
There is a new development in Calabash called Kingfish, it is the rebirth of a failed community many years ago.
They are building a community house on Sunset Beach beside the house owned by Ocean Ridge Plantation, ocean front.
Really good replies. This is just what I was looking for with regard to good locations and
amenities. We will not be in that area until this Spring and can use all the feed back we
can get, attempting to waste as little time as possible when we get there.

Hey Beer Belly!
How did your retirement search go? We just got back from looking at KingfishBay and loved it much because of the proximity to the Fish Capital of the World as we were told by locals however, we went to Dockside Restaurant and that was a huge disappointment. Hope other local restaurants are not in the same category. We also visited Brunswick Plantation and Winding River which were also at the top of our retirement list with Compass Pointe and Brunswick Forest but now we’re more confused than ever. Any advice?
Thanks in advanced!
