We are considering retiring there and cost of living is important. I couldn't find any threads on this subject. If someone could please tell me costs of gas, electric, water, etc. Thank you
There are too many variables here. What is the Square footage you are looking at? What temp do you keep your home at in the summer? winter? Gas water heater or electric? Does the house have energy efficient windows? Appliances? Do you have a big wall of windows that face west?
1200 sq ft house. 2 people, new house, winter temp 68, summer 79. No big wall of Windows. Gas water heater and heat. Energy efficient. Just wanted to get a rough idea. I could look up the electric kWh price. Ours here is $0.079675.
Depending on who services the house you purchase/rent, you could pay either .09 or .14 kwh. Horry Electric Coop charges .14 in winter and .13 in summer. Santee Cooper charges around .09. The house will be serviced by one or the other...you do not have the ability to choose between them.
Our water bill runs less than $30/month if we do not use the irrigation system to water the lawn.
Finding a house with natural gas is unusual in MB. There are a few areas that have it, but not many. Most houses are all electric with a heat pump rather than a furnace. Our house is bigger than you describe so I'm not the best person to provide experience on what it costs to heat/cool a house that size.
Don't know where you're coming from but we found food prices about the same...sometimes a little higher. Gasoline prices are among the lowest in the country due to low state gas tax but that could be going up next year. Property taxes are much lower than those in the northeast but about the same as some mid-Atlantic states. Sales tax runs between 8-9 cents depending on where you buy and what (lots of exclusions from sales taxes).
Generally speaking, we moved here from CT and find that our biggest decrease in costs were property taxes (huge drop), gasoline and heating/cooling (due to not having a gas and an electric bill). Other than that, costs are very similar.
