Pawleys Island Plaza is a retail center located at 10225 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island, South Carolina 29585-6505 on the northeast corner of Ocean Highway and Petigru Drive.
Pawleys Island Plaza's major tenant will be Publix #1478, a supermarket occupying 45,700 square feet in space F1. An opening date for Publix #1478 has not been announced yet. It has been projected to open in early 2015. It will be Publix's first store in Georgetown County and second in the Myrtle Beach area. A hiring event for Publix #1478 was held in January.
Tuesday Morning #408, an existing tenant, occupies 12,000 square feet in space H1.
I thought Food Lion had a store at Pawleys Island Plaza some time ago before it was replaced by store #1148 at Pawley's Crossing, 9380 Ocean Highway, Pawleys Island, South Carolina 29585-7595.
I don't know the history of the complex, but it does create some concern for me. The design that I saw didn't include a separate group of businesses that are on the frontage of hwy 17, and I read somewhere that that will include a dunkin donuts ( which is only mildly disconcerting since we have so many good bakeries) and another sandwich/sub shop. This end of the Neck doesn't need another grocery, though I personally am a huge fan of Publix, nor more franchised businesses. We need things that will actually contribute to the well-being of residents in the area like a shoe store and a reasonable priced clothing shop- and I am certain that there are small businesses out there that can provide those things. All this "boutique" mentality has got to be balanced out!

Don't overlook the Fresh Market. While it may not meet everyone's definition of a super market, it's in direct competition with upper tier grocers such as Publix and Lowe's. When Fresh Market first opened, the parking lot was jammed. Now, you can roll into a storefront parking space at just about any time. It will be interesting to see if all survive.
The Fresh Market would be a specialty grocer. Most of its business comes in fresh food service departments inclusive of bakery, delicatessen and meat. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Markets are also specialty grocers who focus on organic products and assorted and specific variety products.
Yeah, I know all that, but the fact remains in a community this small, Fresh Market, Lowe's and Publix are all competing for the same customer $$. Both Lowe's and Publix position themselves as an upscale grocery, emphasizing their organic selection, butcher-style meat display with cut-to-order, along with extensive deli and bakery sections. Lowe's "SausageWorks", with custom-flavored sausage made in-house, is the perfect example. They are essentially offering all the things that Fresh Market says makes it unique. IMO, BILO and Food Lion have a reasonably solid niche in this market. The other three will be fighting it out to attract the Mercedes crowd. It's hard for me to see them all being winners. At least Publix was considerate enough to locate on property that had already been commercialized. Both FM and Lowe's felt the need to fill in more wetlands and bulldoze more trees. Just what we needed....
